Najeeb Jung resigns as Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Kejriwal surprised

In a surprise move, Najeeb Jung on Thursday resigned as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. He submitted his resignation to the government of India. According to Raj Bhawan, Jung would be returning to his first love, which is, academics. In a brief statement, Jung thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for all the help and cooperation he received during his tenure. He also thanked the people of Delhi for all their support and affection, especially during the one year’s President Rule in Delhi, when he got unstinted support from them and which in turn helped run the administration in Delhi smoothly and effortlessly. He was also thankful to Chief Minister Kejriwal, with whom he always had dispute over administrative jurisdiction, for his association in the last two years.


Double delight for R Ashwin at ICC Annual Awards

R Ashwin became the third Indian player to win Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy after being named the ICC Cricketer of the Year and ICC Test Cricketer of the Year. It turned out to be double delight for Ravichandran Ashwin at the ICC Annual Awards as he became only the third Indian player ever to win the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy after being named the ICC Cricketer of the Year besides the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year. The off-spinner thus became the third India player and 12th overall to win the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers TrophyAshwin follows in the footsteps of Rahul Dravid (2004) and Sachin Tendulkar (2010), while other recipients of the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy include Andrew Flintoff and Jacques Kallis (joint-winners in 2005), Ricky Ponting (2006 and 2007), Shivnarine Chanderpaul (2008), Mitchell Johnson (2009 and 2014), Jonathan Trott (2011), Kumar Sangakkara (2012), Michael Clarke (2013) and Steve Smith (2015).


Volume up but value of card transactions falls to 9-month low

The decline in November came even as the amount spent at PoS terminals grew consistently this calendar from Rs 33,230 crore in January 2016 to Rs 51,116 crore in October 2016. WHILE most banks have reported an increase in the number of transactions involving swipe-cards since demonetization was announced on November 8, there has been a sharp decline in the total value of these transactions. Reflecting a dip in consumption, the use of debit and credit cards at point of sale (PoS) terminals fell to a nine-month low in value terms in November and witnessed a sharp decline of 31 per cent over that in the previous month.
