India and Sri Lanka Conducted Naval Exercise

  • The Indian and Sri Lankan Navies would undertake the 4th edition of Sri Lanka-India Exercise (SLINEX) off Trincomalee, Sri Lanka from October 27 to November 1, 2015 focusing on anti-piracy exercises, gun firings, cross-deck helicopter operations and anti-surface operations.
  • Indian Naval ships Kora, Kirpan (both missile corvettes) and Savitri (offshore patrol vessel) along with ship-borne integral helicopters entered Trincomalee to participate in the exercise. In addition, an Indian Naval maritime reconnaissance aircraft also participated in the exercise.
  • SLINEX series of bilateral maritime exercises were initiated in 2005 and since then three successful engagements have been conducted.

Missile Complex in Hyderabad Renamed after Kalam

  • The prestigious Missile Complex at Hyderabad that houses research units of DRDO was renamed after late President APJ Abdul Kalam on the occasion of his 84th birth anniversary on October 15, 2015.
  • The Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Complex comprises Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL), Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL) and Research Centre Imarat (RC1). which is considered the brain child of Kalam.
  • The ‘Missile Man’ and popular as the ‘People’s President’, Kalam passed away on July 27, 2015.

India-China Joint Exercise Hand-in-Hand 2015 Concluded

  • The fifth edition of India China Combined Military Training Exercise Hand-in-Hand 2015 commenced on October 12, 2015 at Kunming Military Academy. Yunnan, China now concluded with a Joint Field Exercise on October 22, 2015.
  • The joint exercise has met its stated objectives; to exchange experience on counter-terrorist training and conducting counter-terrorist operations, enhance mutual trust and understanding and promote healthy military relations between the two armies.
  • The Indian contingent returned to India by military aircraft on October 23, 2015. The Hand-in-Hand series of joint military exercise between armies of India and China was started for the first time in 2007.

Indian Air Force Celebrated 83rd Air Force Day

  • The Indian Air Force is celebrating its 83rd Air Force Day with a large parade and air display at the Hindon air base located in Ghaziabad (Uttar Pradesh) on October 8, 2015. It was celebrated for first time in 1932 as an auxiliary air force of Indian Empire.
  • The highlight of this year’s even re-constituted as Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team that was showcased for the 1 st time. The planes like the Sukhoi-30 MKI, MIG-21, MIG-29, Giobemaster. Hercules and Mirage 2000 also performed multiple maneuvers Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar was designated as post of Honorary Group Captain in the IAF in 2010 at this event.

India, USA and Japan Navies Kicked-off Malabar Exercise

  • The navies of India, USA and’Japan began the five-day ‘Malabar exercise’ on the Eastern coast on October 14, 2015 in which several warships, aircraft carriers and fast attack submarine would participated.
  • The event Malabar 2015 termed as ‘complex’, ‘high-end war-fighting’ is a latest in the continuing series of exercises conducted to advance multi-national maritime relationships and mutual security issues. This is the first such drill involving navies of three countries in the Bay of Bengal in eight years, a move likely to concern China.
  • The exercise includes both ‘ashore’ and ‘at-sea training’. There would be knowledge sharing sessions on carrier strike group operations, maritime patrol, anti-submarine warfare, among others.

‘INS-Astradharani’ Commissioned into Indian Navy

  • India’s first completely indigenous Torpedo launch and Recovery Vessel (TRV), INS-Astradharani, has been commissioned into the naval force in Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh on October 7, 2015. The vessel comes as a replaeement of INS-Astravahini that was built by Goa Shipyard Linjited and PS and Company for the Indian Navy. It was decommissioned July, 2015.
  • The INS-Astradharani was built under the joint efforts of Naval Science and Technological Laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Shoft Shipyard and IIT-T Charagpur. It is 50 m twin-hulled warship with maximum speed of 15 knots (28 km/h).

DRDO Sets-up World’s Highest Terrestrial Centre in Ladakh

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) established the world’s highest terrestrial centre dubbed as Extreme Altitude Research Centre at 17600 feet above sea level at Changla near Pengong lake in Ladakh as on October 4, 2015.
  • The centre will act as an important utility for research work in frontal areas of food and agriculture and bio-medical sciences for well being of the soldiers deployed in high altitude cold desert.
  • It will also provide unique opportunity to other establishments and labs of DRDO for evaluation and testing of electronics and communication devices.
  • Leh based Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (D1HAR) was nodal DRDO establishment to established this centre.
