Sourav Ganguly

  • Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly was appointed the President of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) on September 24, 2015 following the death of Jagmohan Dalmiya. The announcement was made by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
  • Avishek Dalmiya was inducted as one of the two joint secretaries replacing the current incumbent Sourav Ganguly. Subir Ganguly will continue as the other joint secretary while Biswarup Dey will continue as treasurer.

Yogi Berra

  • Baseball player Yogi Berra, World War II veteran, master of misstatement and beloved international icon has died on September 22, 2015 on the 69th anniversary of his Major League debut, at the age of 90.
  • Yogi Berra was born in Missouri. He had played 19 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1946 to 1963 and his last match in 1965. He had spent almost his entire 19-year baseball career with the New York Yankees.
  • He is one of only five players to win the American League Most Valuable Player Award for 3 times. He is widely regarded as 1 of the greatest catchers in baseball history. In 1972, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Narsingh Pancham Yadav

  • Indian wrestler Narsingh Pancham Yadav secured an 2016 Rio Olympic quota place for India on September 13, 2015. He bagged a bronze medal in the men’s 74 kg Freestyle category at the World Wrestling Championship held at Las Vegas (USA).
  • This is for the first time that an Indian wrestler has earned an Olympic berth with a medal at the World Championship.

Shane Watson

  • Australian all-rounder Shane Watson announced his retirement on September 6, 2015 from test cricket effective immediately after
  • another injury setback cut short his one-day international tour of Britain.
  • He debuted in international cricket in 2002, playing his first ODI against South Africa. Till then he had played 190 ODI matches and scored 5718 runs with an average of 40.55. His highest ODI score was 185 (not out). He had bowled 6406 balls and took 168 wickets at an average of 3179 runs.
  • He played 59 Tests for Australia, scoring 3731 runs and taking 75 wickets. His highest test score was 176. He had bowled 5495 balls and took 75 wickets at an average of 33.68 runs. He had also played in 48 matches and scored 1156 runs with an average of 26.88.

Anirban Lahiri

  • Ace golfer Anirban Lahiri became the first Indian to qualify for the prestigious President’s Cup on September 8, 2015. He has won 11 National titles in India including Ahmedabad Masters and Haryana Open. Union government has bestowed Arjuna Award on him in 2014.
  • Presetly, Lahiri ranked World No.40. He qualified for this cup through automatic qualifications for the International Team. The International team is set to take on United States team in the biennial Presidents Cup 2015 to be held at Incheon, South Korea.
  • The biennial Cup is a series of men’s golf matches between a team representing United States (US) and an International Team representing the rest of the world excluding Europe. In case of European counterparts, the matches are played for the Ryder Cup which older than President’s Cup.

Commonwealth Youth Games 2015 Held

  • The Samoa Youth Games began on September 5, 2015 and closed on September 12, 2015. It was the 5th Commonwealth Youth Games which started in 2000. They were held in Apia, the capital of Samoa.
  • Up to 1000 young Commonwealth athletes aged 14-18 participated from 63 nations and territories and competed for 107 Gold Medals in 9 type of sports. India ended at the 5th spot in the overall tally with 19 medals.
  • Samoa is a group of Islands in Oceania, situated in the south Pacific Ocean. It is located approximately midway between the isla’nds of Hawaii and New Zealand and is approximately 800 km from Fiji.

IKF Recognised as Regional Sports Federation

  • Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has recognised the Indian Kalarippayattu Federation (IKF) as Regional Sports Federation on September 14, 2015 with immediate effect. Thus, the Ministry is promoting and giving due acknowledgment and importance to sports having regional spread.
  • With this, the Indian Kalarippayattu Federation (IKF) granted a major role for promotion and development of Kalarippayattu sport in India. Kalaripayattu sport is a Martial art played/performed in Southern State of Kerala and in contiguous parts of Tamil Nadu.
  • Kalaripayattu is the most ancient martial art in the world. It is believed that the Kalaripayattu culture is’ 3000 years old. Kalaripayattu is known to be the mother of all martial arts.

Durban Confirmed as Host for 2022 Commonwealth Games

  • The South African city of Durban was selected as the host for the 2022 Commonwealth Games at the Federation’s general assembly in New Zealand on September 2, 2015 after the Canadian city of Edmonton withdrew from contention in February, citing falling oil prices.
  • The 22nd Commonwealth Games would be held from July 18-30, 2022 opening on the birth date of the late South African president and anti-apartheid hero Nelson Mandela.
  • First held in 1930, 2022 will mark the first time the Games will be held in Africa, a move that could pave the way for South Africa to make another attempt for the Olympics after Cape Town finished third in bidding for the 2004 summer Games.
