The earth’s atmosphere is transparent for the visible and thermal radiations of short wavelengths coming from the sun. The earth’s surface and objects on it thus become warm in the day time. A part of these radiations are reflected back by the clouds and a part of it is absorbed by the green house gases like carbon dioxide, methane, water vapours and chlorofluorocarbons. Thus the clouds and green house gases prevents a large fraction of radiations given out by the earth’s surface, from escaping into the space. This phenomenon is called greenhouse effect.
