Saurashtra University is located in Rajkot, Gujarat; it was established on 23rd May 1967. There was a huge demand to get a separate university in Gujarat which led to the establishment of Saurashtra University. The demand became stronger when the Gujarat state was officially established in May 1961. So many freedom fighters and educationalists paved the path for this university. It was established after the passing of the Saurashtra University Act by the Legislative Assembly of Gujarat (Gujarat Act No. 39 of 1965). It first had its headquarters in two places, Rajkot and Bhavnagar. But Bhavnagar incorporated its own university in the name of Bhavnagar University and so Rajkot became the only headquarters for Saurashtra University. This university has an area of 363 acres. It has affiliated around 238 colleges under it all spread across the regions of Amreli, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Surendranagar, and Morbi districts.

Saurashtra University is an ‘A’ Grade accredited Conventional State University by NAAC in the state of Gujarat, in the year 2014. There are different sets in the university dedicated to certain fields like Sardar Vallabhbahi Patel Chair, Gulabdas Broker Chair, Nehru Chair, Swami Dayanand Saraswati Chair, Baba Saheb Ambedkar Chair, etc. This university has collaborated with the Government of Gujarat, Government of India, Commissionerate of Industries, Dept of Science and Technology. They altogether started the National Faculty for Drugs and Discovery (NFDD) in the year 2009.
