Reid Schaefer (born September 21, 2003) is a Canadian ice hockey winger who is a prospect for the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League (NHL).

Reid Schaefer is the son of Jeremy and Lindsey Schaefer. The Boston Bruins drafted Jeremy Schaefer in the NHL in 1994.

Schaefer grew up in an athletic family, as his father and cousin were both ice hockey players.

The winger is a National Hockey League prospect for the Edmonton Oilers and currently plays for the Western Hockey League’s Seattle Thunderbirds (WHL).

Reid Schaefer’s parents, Jeremy and Lindsey Schaefer, are extremely proud of their son.

His father, Jeremy, was a seventh-round pick of the Bruins in 1994 and has worked with Power Edge Pro, a skating-improvement company that Connor McDavid uses.

Schaefer told The Athletic an interesting story about improving his skating during the pandemic-affected 2020-21 season.

When his son’s sports were cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions, Jeremy organised drills for him. They used the No. 13 water hazard at the Links at Spruce Grove golf course, which is right next to their house.

Meet His Father Jeremy Schaefer

Schaefer began his hockey career in Spruce Grove as a bantam AAA player before spending five seasons in the WHL with the Medicine Hat Tigers, Saskatoon Blades, and Calgary Hitmen.

He was drafted by the Boston Bruins in 1994 and finished his career with the ECHL’s Roanoke Express.

Biography Of Reid Schaefer

Schaefer was born on September 21, 2003, to father Jeremy in Spruce Grove, Alberta, Canada[1]. His father and cousin were both ice hockey players, so he was born into an athletic family.

After five years in the Western Hockey League, his father was drafted by the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Boston Bruins.

In addition, his cousin Colin Fraser was drafted in the third round by the Philadelphia Flyers.

Career Of Reid Schaefer

Schaefer grew up in Alberta, where he was a member of the Edmonton Okanagan Hockey Academy (OHA) Bantam Prep Team in the Canadian Sports School Hockey League. He had 11 goals and 12 assists for 23 points in 27 games during the 2017-18 season.

Schaefer returned to the OHA Edmonton Elite after being drafted in the eighth round by the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League (WHL). He accumulated 24 points in 34 games. Schaefer signed a WHL Standard Player Agreement with the Thunderbirds on September 2, 2018, following his second season with the OHA prep team.

Schaefer appeared in seven games for the Thunderbirds before the WHL suspended play due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the pause, Schaefer spent the 2019-20 season with the Spruce Grove Saints of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL), where he tallied six goals and 16 points while accruing 32 penalty minutes.

Professional Career Of Reid Schaefer

Schaefer had his first full season with the Thunderbirds in 2020-21, scoring 32 goals and 58 points in 66 regular season games. As a ‘C’ ranked prospect on the NHL Central Scouting Bureau’s (CSS) preliminary ‘Players to Watch’ list for the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, he began the season with low expectations. His ranking rose as the season progressed, which Schaefer attributed to his offseason efforts. The CSS ranked Schaefer 31st among North American skaters after he scored 32 goals in 66 games.

Oilers scouts encouraged General Manager Ken Holland to attend the WHL final games in Edmonton and watch Schaefer play as the Thunderbirds qualified for the playoffs. Prior to the draught, Schaefer was compared to Zack Kassian and described as having “legitimate skill, scoring touch, and tenacity” and being destined to be a middle-six winger.

The Edmonton Oilers selected Schaefer 32nd overall in the first round of the Entry Draft as a result of his play and rise in the rankings. Following the draught, GM Holland praised Schaefer for being a strong competitive big player capable of playing in the NHL in two to three years.

Schaefer signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Oilers after the draught and participated in their Development Camp. He also attended the Oilers’ rookie camp, where he worked on his skating strength and explosiveness. He went through training camp with the Oilers before being assigned to the Thunderbirds for the 2022-23 season.
