Suvra Mukherjee

  • Suvra Mukherjee, wife of President Pranab ‘ Mukherjee, has died on August 18, 2015 at the age of 75 years.
  • She was a vocalist of Rabindra Sangeet and performed in the poet’s dance-dramas for long years not only in different parts of India, but also in Europe, Asia and Africa.
  • Mukherjee was born on September 17, 1940 in Jessore (now in Bangladesh) and married Mukherjee on July 13,1957.
  • A graduate, Mukherjee was a fan of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore and founded the Geetanjali Troupe to propagate his philosophy.
  • The late first lady was also a painter who had many group and solo exhibitions to her credit.
  • She has written two books i.e., Chokher Aloey : a personal account of her close intera’ction with Indira Gandhi and Chena Achenai Chin : a travelogue recounting her visit to China.

Om Prakash Munjal

  • Chairman of Hero Cycles and one of the founders of the Hero Group, Om Praksh Munjal, died on August 13, 2015 at the age of 86.
  • Now, the Chairmanship of the company rests with his son Pankaj Munjal.
  • He, along with his 3 brothers including family patriarch Brijmohan Lall Munjal, started a bicycle spare parts business in Amritsar in 1944.
  • They subsequently moved the base to Ludhiana, named the company ‘Hero’ and set-up India’s first bicycle manufacturing unit in 1956.
  • During the early 1980s, Hero Cycles emerged as the largest manufacturer of bicycles by volume in the world.
  • Now, it is a Rs 3000 crore company and has diversified into other businesses such as auto parts manufacturing and hospitality.

Bhalchandra Pendharkar

  • Veteran Marathi stage actor, singer and drama producer, Bhalchandra Pendharkar, has died on August 11, 2015 at the a of 94.
  • He was affectionately known as Anna and widely known through 1 play Duritanche Timir Java
  • He was born on November 25, 1921, at Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh.
  • He received the Bal Gandharva award and the Vishnudas Bhave award. He was also a recipient the Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 2004.

Kayyara Kinhanna Rai

  • Kayyara Kinhanna Rai, a Kannada poet and freedom fighter has died on August 9, 2015 at the age of 101 years.
  • The poet’s 100th birthday was recently celebrated on June 8, 2015 at Badiyadkka in Kasaragod district of Kerala.
  • He was born in the then Madras Presidency of British India and started his career as a secondary school teacher and later delved into journalism and contributed his writings to various newspapers. Some of his famous poems are Aikyagana, Shreemukha, Chethana, Punarnava and Koraga.
  • He was in the forefront of the movement to merge the Kannada-speaking region North of the Chandragiri river with Karnataka to fulfil its linguistic and development aspirations after the 1957 States reorganisation and founded Kasaragod Vileenekarana Kriya Samiti to fight for the cause.

Aziz Haqqani

  • Abdul Aziz Haqqani, a top leader of Pakistan-based dreaded Haqqani network, has been named as a ‘Specially Designated Global Terrorist’ by the United States on August 26, 2015 for his involvement in planning and carrying out attacks against Afghanistan.
  • With this inclusion, Aziz Haqqani comes under the ambit of US sanctions, which prohibits any US national from maintaining any relationship with him and seizure of all his assets, if any, in the USA.
  • Aziz Haqqani assumed the leadership role of the al-Qaeda-linked Haqqani network after the death of his brother Badruddin Haqqani. In August, 2014, the USA had announced a reward of up to $ 5 million for information leading to the location of Aziz Haqqani.

BalwanJ Moreshwar Purandare

  • Balwant Moreshwar Purandare, eminent Historian writer of Maharasht ra has been conferred with Maharashtra Bhushan Award 2015 in literature category. The award is bestowed upon him by Governor C. Vidyasagar Rao on August 19, 2015.
  • He is better known as Babasaheb Purandare. He was born on July 29, 1922. He is credited with writing the first historical work on Chattrapati Shivaji that was widely read across the State and he is referred to as Shiv Shahir –Shivaji’s poet.
