His father, Phillip R. Allen, was an actor, while his mother, Joan Snyder Allen, is an artist. Growing up around creative people helped expose him to artistic expression from an early age.
Allen’s career extends beyond television acting. He has also pursued photography, writing and music.

Allen’s performance helped him build a loyal following that continued to support his later projects. In recent years, he appeared as Liam Walker in the television series Walker, which ran from 2021 to 2024.

Early Interest in Photography
Photography became one of Allen’s interests during childhood. According to his interview with Cosmopolitan, he began taking an interest in photography at around nine years old.
For him, photography offered a way to observe the world and communicate through images. It also provided a creative outlet separate from acting.
Photography remained important as his acting career developed. He later shared his work with audiences and explored the relationship between photographs, written words and personal expression.
His interest in photography shows that his creative ambitions were not limited to performing in front of a camera. He also wanted to work behind it and develop his own visual perspective.

Allen’s childhood was influenced by a mix of acting, visual art and music. In the same interview, he recalled listening to musicians such as Van Morrison and Bob Dylan.

Although acting eventually brought him widespread recognition, these other interests continued to shape his public and professional life.
Education and Acting Training
Allen pursued formal training in acting and graduated from the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in 2009. The institution provides training in the performing arts and helped him prepare for professional opportunities.
Acting training involves more than memorising dialogue. It can include character development, voice work, movement, scene study and learning how to communicate emotions convincingly.
For an aspiring actor, such training can help build the skills needed for auditions, rehearsals and professional productions.
Allen’s education preceded his most recognisable television role. His breakthrough as Toby Cavanaugh arrived soon after he completed his studies.

Keegan Allen’s Acting Career
Allen’s career developed through television and film appearances before he became a household name among fans of Pretty Little Liars.2
His work on the series gave him a platform to demonstrate his acting abilities. Later projects allowed him to take on different characters and reach audiences beyond the original show’s fan base.
Breakthrough With Pretty Little Liars
Pretty Little Liars premiered in 2010 and was based on the book series by Sara Shepard. The drama followed a group of friends whose lives were disrupted by secrets, mysterious messages and the disappearance of their friend Alison DiLaurentis.
The series combined teen drama, mystery and thriller elements. Its central mysteries and complicated relationships helped it build a devoted audience.
Allen played Toby Cavanaugh, a character whose storyline developed significantly over the course of the series. Toby initially appeared as an outsider who faced suspicion from other characters.
As the story progressed, viewers learned more about his personal struggles, relationships and motivations. His relationship with Spencer Hastings became one of the show’s important romantic storylines.
The pairing attracted a strong following among fans and helped make Toby a memorable character. Allen’s performance allowed him to portray different sides of Toby, including vulnerability, determination and emotional conflict.
The series ran for seven seasons, ending in 2017. It remains the role most closely associated with Allen’s name.
What Made Toby Cavanaugh Popular?
Toby’s popularity came partly from the way his character evolved. He was not simply a supporting character who remained unchanged throughout the story.
His relationships and personal challenges became part of the show’s larger mysteries. Viewers gradually learned more about his history and his place within the lives of the main characters.
Allen’s performance helped audiences connect with Toby’s quieter and more serious personality. The character also became closely associated with Spencer Hastings, making him an important part of the show’s romantic storyline.
In a 2021 interview with Glitter Magazine, Allen reflected on his experience working on Pretty Little Liars. He discussed the opportunities the show gave him and the role that its fan community played in supporting his career.
Life After Pretty Little Liars
After Pretty Little Liars ended in 2017, Allen continued to pursue acting and other creative projects. Moving beyond a popular long-running series can be challenging for an actor.
Audiences often associate performers with their most famous characters and finding new roles can require patience and flexibility. Allen continued working across different forms of entertainment rather than relying only on his earlier success.
His career demonstrates how television actors can use the recognition gained from one major role to explore new opportunities.
Keegan Allen’s Role in Walker
One of Allen’s major projects after Pretty Little Liars was Walker, a television drama that aired from 2021 to 2024.
He played Liam Walker, the brother of the central character Cordell Walker. The series followed a Texas Ranger balancing his professional responsibilities with family life.
The role gave Allen an opportunity to work in a different television setting. While Pretty Little Liars focused on young adults, secrets and mysteries, Walker centred on family relationships, crime and law enforcement.
The change in genre allowed him to reach a different audience while continuing his television career.

His creative interests also include music and writing. These activities give him different ways to express ideas and emotions.
Allen’s experience highlights how performers can maintain interests beyond the roles they play on screen. For some actors, photography or writing becomes a way to develop a more personal creative voice.
His public comments about photography also offer insight into the person behind Toby Cavanaugh. Fans who know him mainly from television may not realise how long he has been interested in visual art.
What Happened to Toby From Pretty Little Liars?
The question has circulated among fans because of the October 2026 reports about Keegan Allen. Toby Cavanaugh is the fictional character Allen played in Pretty Little Liars.3
The recent news concerns Allen himself, not a new incident involving the character. According to reports published on October 9, Allen said he had been robbed and assaulted in West Hollywood the previous evening.
He shared a social media video showing blood on his face and described being attacked by two men.
Where Did the Incident Happen?
The reported robbery occurred outside Laurel Supply, a grocery store on the 8400 block of Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to a robbery report at approximately 9:05 p.m. on October 8, 2026.
The department’s account described two male suspects dressed in black. One allegedly pointed a silver handgun at the victim while the other pointed a knife.
They demanded a watch and bracelet. The victim was then struck in the face with the handgun, and the suspects fled with the watch.
What Did Keegan Allen Say About the Attack?
Allen shared a video on Instagram shortly after the reported incident. His face appeared bloodied and he seemed shaken while describing what had happened.
He said that two men had hit him and threatened him with weapons before taking his watch. The video also included what appeared to be surveillance footage of the encounter.
The footage showed two people confronting a man in a parking area and apparently demanding his belongings. Allen’s post expressed shock and anger over the incident.
He also raised concerns about public safety and called for authorities to use available surveillance technology to help identify the suspects. His statements were personal reactions to a frightening experience.
They should be understood in that context rather than treated as a broader assessment of crime across Los Angeles.
What Were His Injuries?
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that the victim suffered a laceration to the forehead after being struck with a handgun. According to the Los Angeles Times, Allen was evaluated and treated at the scene before being released.
Other reports noted that he later expressed concern about a possible concussion and sought further medical attention. The available reports do not establish every detail of his subsequent medical condition.
It is therefore best to avoid making claims about the severity of any longer-term injury without a reliable update from Allen or his representatives.
Have the Suspects Been Arrested?
In the initial reports published on October 9, 2026, the suspects had not been publicly identified and the investigation was ongoing.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department asked anyone with information about the robbery to contact detectives at the West Hollywood Station.
The department’s public statement did not name Allen but described an incident matching the circumstances he reported.
An investigation can involve reviewing surveillance footage, gathering witness statements and following other available evidence.
However, no conclusion about the suspects’ identities or guilt should be drawn without verified information from authorities.
Readers should consult later statements from law enforcement or reputable news organisations for updates on the case.
