RBI Seen Cutting Rates As Demonetization Rattles Economy: Poll

The Reserve Bank of India is expected to cut interest rates next week and economists are set to chop growth and inflation predicts after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s currency crackdown rattled the economy and severely hurt consumption. India’s economy expanded 7.3 per cent in the July-September quarter from a year earlier, making it the fastest growing major country in the world. But it could easily lose top spot if some of the more pessimistic views that suggest growth could halve post-demonetization come true. The median forecast in the poll of nearly 60 economists this week was that the RBI’s recently formed Monetary Policy Committee will cut the repo rate by 25 basis points (bps) to 6.00 per cent when it concludes its two-day meeting on December 7 from 6.25 per cent now.

India beat Pakistan to win sixth straight Women’s Asia Cup

The Indian women’s team edged out rivals Pakistan by 17 runs in the final to conclude the 2016 Women’s Asia Cup T20 title. After winning the toss, the Indian team opted to bat first at the Asian Institute of Technology Ground in Bangkok. Star opener Mithali Raj set the mood for the match, hitting some boundaries early on. Wickets kept falling on the other end but the right-hander held the innings from one end and kept the scoreboard beating. Mithali notched up her ninth T20I half century as India posted 121 in the title match for Pakistan to chase.

Heart of Asia conference names Pakistan terror groups, urges states to act

In line with the New Delhi-Kabul unity that Pakistan remains a safe haven for and a source of terror, the declaration adopted Sunday at the Sixth Heart of Asia Conference-Istanbul Process mentions two groups targeting India, Lashkar-e-Taiba and the Jaish-e-Mohammad, in addition to the Haqqani network, among the organizations causing a “high level of violence” in Afghanistan and the region. Echoing the mood set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ashraf Ghani in their inception speeches — Modi said “silence and inaction against terrorism in Afghanistan and our region will only inspire terrorists and their masters” — the declaration calls for “concerted regional and international cooperation to ensure elimination of terrorism, in all its forms and manifestations, including bankrupt of terrorist sanctuaries and safe havens in the Heart of Asia region, as well as disrupting all financial, tactical and logistical support for terrorism”.
