Infosys Prize 2015

  • The Infosys Science Foundation (ISF) honoured winners of the Infosys Prize 2015 on February 13, 2016 for their outstanding achievements and contributions to research in the fields of science and humanities.
  • Honorable President of India, Pranab Mukherjee felicitated the winners.
  • Prof. Umesh Waghmare, Professor at Theoretical Sciences Unit, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced.
  • Prof. Jonardon Ganeri, Global Network Professor of Philosophy at New York University, New York.
  • Dr. Amit Sharma, Head, Structural and Computational Biology Group, International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology at New Delhi.
  • Prof. Mahan Mj, Professor, School of Mathematics, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research at Mumbai has been awarded for his contributions to geometric group theory, low-dimensional topology and complex geometry. In particular, Prof. Mahan Mj established a central conjecture in the Thurston program to study hyperbolic 3-manifolds and introduced important new tools to study fundamental groups of complex manifolds.
  • Prof. G. Ravindra Kumar, Senior Professor, Department of Nuclear and Atomic Physics, Tata Institute of fundamental Research at Mumbai.
  • Dr. Srinath Raghavan, Sehior Fellow, Centre for Policy Research at New Delhi
  • The Infosys prize is given in six categories. They are Engineering and Computer Science, Humanities, Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences.
  • The laureate in each category was awarded a purse of 65 lakh, a 22-karat gold medallion and a citation certificate.

Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Lifetime Achievement Award

  • Pandit Ram Narayan, a Padma Vibhushan, has been choosen for the Maharashtra government’s Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Lifetime Achievement Award for 2015-16 in the field of classical music.
  • Minister for cultural affairs Vinod Tawde announced the award on February 3, 2016.
  • He was one of Hindi filmdom’s most sought-after instrumentalists to fine-time the sarangi, effecting major changes in its structure and the set of strings.
  • The award carries a plaque, a citation and cash prize of Rs 5 lakh, at a press conference.

Places in News
Delhi

  • Delhi international airport has received three international awards as on February 29, 2016, including for best airport by size in the Asia Pacific region. These awards have been given by the Airports Council International (ACI) for 2015.
  • Delhi airport has retained the world’s number 1 position for the second consecutive year in 25-40 Million Passengers Per Annum (MPPA) category. The two other awards are for best airport by size & region; Asia Pacific (25-40 MPPA) and second best airport by region (Asia Pacific).
  • Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is managed by Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), which is a three-way joint venture led by GMR group.

Mysuru (Karnataka)

  • Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu announced top 10 cleanest cities in the country on February 15, 2016 according to the Swachh Sarvekshan that began in 2015. It is the second cleanliness survey.
  • Mysuru topped the list of 10 cities, Chandigarh and Tiruchirappalli placed in the 2nd and 3rd position. Delhi came 4th in the list, whereas Visakhapatnam, Surat, Rajkot, Gangtok, Pimpri-Chinchwad and Greater Mumbai were in 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th position respectively.
