The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts this exam for recruitment of posts in ministries, departments and organisations of the Government of India. The complete name of this exam is SSC CGL: Staff Selection Commission – Combined Graduate Level Examination. The SSC was established in 1975 and it conducts exam for various posts in the Group B and Group C sectors

Syllabus and Pattern for SSC CGL 2018

The syllabus for this exam has five main sections. These sections are English, General Knowledge, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, and Reasoning.

So, there are exam conducted in four different tiers.

  1. Tier I

This is also known as Preliminary exam. The syllabus and exam pattern for Tier I has been given in the next section. Based on the results of Tier I exam, candidates who clear the cut off can appear for next level.

  1. Tier II

This is also called the Mains exam. The syllabus and exam pattern for Tier II has been given in the next section. Candidates who clear the cut off can appear for next level. Recently, this exam is conducted online and it is objective paper.

  1. Tier III

This is a Descriptive paper. The syllabus and exam pattern for Tier III has been given in the next section. This is a pen and paper based exam that can taken in either English or Hindi by the candidates.

  1. Tier IV

It was in 2016 that this tier was added. There two different test in this tier and the information is available in the next section.

SSC CGL Tier-3 Exam Pattern

Tier-3 of SSC CGL 2018 will be a descriptive test.

The paper will be in English/Hindi and will constitute of 100 marks.

The entire paper needs to be completed in 60 minutes.

SSC CGL Tier-4 Exam Pattern

DEST: Candidates are required to type 2000 words in 15 minutes on a computer in English. This test is conducted to check a candidate’s writing skills.

CPT: This test is conducted to check a candidate’s proficiency in Word Processing, Spreadsheets and Generation of Slides.

Maths Book for SSC CGL

For most of us, the medium of education has been English for quite some 10-12 years. It is the time that students should be aware of basic concepts of English grammar and its structure.

In this case, all you need to work on is practicing. There is quite a few good book available in the market for practicing the English for SSC level exam. These books are:-

This section has a numerous number of topics. You may be tempted to not waste money by buying books for this section. But collecting the information for this vast subject is difficult. There will be those good wishes relatives and friends who may swear about reading a newspaper daily for covering this section, but from SSC CGL exam point of view, don’t listen to them. Making lists, keep notes, etc gets tacky to handle. And above all, this procedure is very time-consuming. So get your hands on a book that will cover all the sections.

Reasoning Books for SSC CGL

To test how accurately you are able to reach a solution to a given problem – a logical thought process and exposure to various such problems are the key factor.

If you are already good at maths, chances are you will do great in this section. Nonetheless, practicing is the only option you can improve your result of this section. That too, regularly. Put your brains to work in all different types and variety of Reasoning question and you will be good to go. Here are a few books you can refer to:-

The not to do things are equally important to know. Even there are books suggested here for you to buy, but I explicitly caution you not buy books that are ‘all in one’ type. This is because such books don’t cover the subject material properly.
