Chris Archer: Amateur career

In Clayton, North Carolina, Archer received his high school education at Clayton High School, where he participated in baseball on the varsity team.

After signing his letter of intent to attend the University of Miami, he changed his mind and went straight into the professional world instead. During his senior year at Clayton High School, Archer compiled a win–loss record of 8–3 and an earned run average (ERA) of 1.75 while pitching.

In the fifth round of the Major League Baseball draft in 2006, Archer was selected by the Cleveland Indians. After signing, he made the transition to the Gulf Coast Indians’ Rookie team. Additionally, he pitched in one game for the Rookie-level Burlington Indians of the Appalachian League.

Archer continued his tenure with the Gulf Coast Indians as the 2007 season got underway. In 2008, Archer started 27 games for the Lake County Captains, who played in the Class A South Atlantic League. He finished the year with a record of 4–8 wins and 8 losses.

Chris Archer: Tampa Bay Rays

Archer was included in a deal in which the Chicago Cubs sent Hak-ju Lee, Brandon Guyer, Robinson Chirinos, and Sam Fuld to the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Matt Garza, Fernando Perez, and Zac Rosscup in January of 2011.

According to Baseball America’s rankings at the beginning of the season, he was the 27th-best prospect in all of baseball. Archer’s earned run average (ERA) was 5.85 through the first two months of the season while he was pitching for the Montgomery Biscuits of the Class AA Southern League.

His ERA dropped to 5.27 by the time the first half of the season was over.

He turned things around in the second half, going 5–4 with a 3.45 earned run average (ERA). Archer was given a promotion, moving him up to the Durham Bulls of the Class AAA International League.

He made two starts for the Bulls at the end of the season, allowing only one run combined between the two starts.

The combined record of his two teams was 9–7, and he had a 4.09 earned run average, 130 strikeouts, and 147.1 innings pitched. Additionally, he led the Southern League with 18 wild pitches.

  • Archer was sent to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for Tyler Glasnow, Austin Meadows, and a player to be named later, who was ultimately revealed to be Shane Baz. The trade took place on July 31, 2018.
  • Archer was pitching against the Cincinnati Reds on April 7, 2019, when Derek Dietrich hit a home run that scored two runs. Archer was at fault for the error. Dietrich waited for a few seconds after the ball went over the wall before he started running.
  • During that time, he stood at home plate and admired the ball as it went over the wall. When Dietrich came back up to bat in the fourth inning, Archer hit him in the back with a pitch.
