Cole Caufield was born in Mosinee, Wisconsin, to parents Paul and Kelly Caufield.
Paul and Kelly gave birth to their son on January 2, 2001, and the 21-year-old athlete began skating at the age of two.
His father and brother were two fantastic persons who guided him to become a great athlete from an early age. Brock Caufield worked with his younger brother to help him become a successful rink player.

Cole Caufield Have Supportive Parents
Cole Caufield has been fortunate to have very supportive parents who have always encouraged him to strive for the best and to never give up.
Caufield’s mother and father frequently attend his matches and cheer him on from the stands; Kelly and Paul Caufield are happiest when they watch their son play and contribute to the team’s score.
They attended numerous games, including Game 1 of the NHL playoffs’ third round, Game 2 of the 2021 Stanley Cup Final, and others.
They have also always trusted Cole and met all of his wishes. He wanted to play in the rink with his 4-year-old brother while he was a 2-year-old in diapers; his parents agreed, and he has been unstoppable since.
The athlete not only played ice hockey, but also baseball and football; he trained to shoot left-handed in order to be a left-handed pitcher in baseball and ran back in football throughout primary school.

Kelly is Cole’s proud mother, the one who reared him with unconditional affection.
His mother bought him a new pair of skates when he was only two years old and wanted to skate like his sibling. While his father and brother were the ones who encouraged him to play hockey, Caufield got ongoing encouragement from his mother to do his best.
Although Miss Caifield hasn’t spoken much about her upbringing, she comes from a sporting family; her father coached high school football in Stevens Point for 25 years.
As a result, from grades 3 through 6, both of her sons played running back under the supervision of their maternal grandfather. Although the siblings did not play football professionally, the skills they learned served them well on the ice.
The athlete learned to roll after taking hits, and his ability to work in tight spaces and roll under impact to find space is clear.
Cole Caufield Followed His Father’s Footsteps
Caufield was born to Paul Caufield, a former University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point player who was the team’s all-time leading scorer from 1988 to 1992.
From 2002 to 2006, Paul was also an assistant coach at UWSP and the manager of Ice Hawks Arena, allowing his children access to an ice rink and more opportunities to practice.
Furthermore, the elder Caufield was the one who instructed him from an early age; he taught his son to shoot from the right because he believed that right shots had an easier angle to access the glove hand of a goaltender.
Without his mentoring, the Montreal Canadiens right winger would not have progressed as far as he has. He is grateful to have a father who molded him into the best possible fit for the sport he has loved since boyhood.
The Love For Ice Hockey Started From His Grandfather
Paul was not the first male in his family to play ice hockey; his father, Wayne Caufield, was the first.
Wayne was a semi-professional hockey player and coach for the Milwaukee Admirals from 1963 until 1976. Cole’s granddad was inducted into the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011.
The former athlete grew raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and used to skate at an ice rink a few blocks from his parents’ house. Furthermore, the Detroit Red Wings prospect spent seven years in the Eastern Hockey League before joining the United States Hockey League’s Admirals program.
Furthermore, after retiring, the late Caufield coached for over two decades and organized hockey clinics in the Milwaukee region; he also handed along his passion for the sport to three generations and many more to come.
Cole Caufield’s Older Brother: Who Is He?
Cole grew up playing hockey with his older brother, Brock Caufield.
Brock is a member of the Wisconsin Badgers men’s ice hockey team; he graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the spring of 2022 with a degree in personal finance and is presently pursuing a master’s degree in sports leadership at UW.
The older Caufield paved the path for his younger brother, helping Cole become the best player possible by playing endless games and practicing on the ice rink with him.

While playing for the University of Wisconsin Badgers, he was the 2020 Big Ten Scoring Champion. After being taken 15th overall by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, he was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year.

Playing career
Caufield joined the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP) in Plymouth, Michigan for the 2017-18 season. He topped the NTDP with 54 goals in combined U-17 and U-18 numbers, falling just short of Auston Matthews’ 55 goals in 2014-15.
Caufield was a full-time member of the NTDP U-18 roster during the 2018-19 season. He scored a career-high six goals against the Green Bay Gamblers on March 15, 2019. Caufield also scored his 105th career goal in this game, breaking Phil Kessel’s previous record set in 2003-05. (104 goals).
In an exhibition game against Switzerland on April 13, 2019, he scored his 56th goal of the season, breaking a single-season goal record. Caufield concluded the season with 72 goals and a career point average of 1.46 per game.
He committed to play collegiate hockey in the NCAA for the University of Wisconsin-Madison beginning in the 2019-20 season on November 19, 2017.
Caufield was regarded as a high prospect among North American skaters prior to his draft year, earning an A rating from the NHL Central Scouting Bureau. The Montreal Canadiens selected him 15th overall in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft on June 21, 2019.
International play
Caufield is a member of the United States national team. During the 2017-18 season, he competed in many international competitions as a 17-year-old, including the 2017 World U-17 Hockey Challenge, where he won a gold medal with 13 points in six games (eight goals, five assists). He was also named to the tournament All-Star team and finished first in goals. Caufield featured in three games in the 2017 Four Nations Cup in Veliky Novgorod, Russia, tallying six goals and one assist as the NTDP U-17 finished first.
He led the team with 10 points (four goals, six assists) in four games at the 2018 Five Nations Cup in Järvenpää, Finland, in February 2018, en route to another NTDP U-17 first-place finish.
The NTDP would settle for a silver medal at the 2018 IIHF World U-18 Championship after losing the final game 3-2 to Finland. Caufield finished the tournament with a total of six points in seven games.
Caufield would continue his strong international play in the 2018-19 season. Caufield helped the NTDP U-18 win the 2018 Five Nations Cup in Kravae, Czech Republic, in late 2018, with seven goals and two assists in four games. Caufield scored three goals and had two assists in four games for the NTDP U-18 team at the 2019 Five Nations Cup in Sochi, Russia.
On April 23, 2019, Caufield scored his tenth and eleventh goals for the NTDP in four preliminary round games at the 2019 IIHF World U-18 Championship, breaking records set by Brett Sterling in 2002 and Phil Kessel in 2005. (nine goals). On April 27, 2019, Caufield tied Alexander Ovechkin’s single tournament goal record (14 goals from 2002) and etched his 18 career goals into the competition’s national record book.
The NTDP would later fall in a shootout to Russia in the semi-finals, 3-2, with the NTDP capturing a bronze medal in a 5-2 win over Canada to close off their tournament play. Caufield was voted championship MVP as well as Best Forward (Directorate Award). Finally, he was named to the tournament All-Star squad after leading the competition in goals.

Cole Caufield was born in Mosinee, Wisconsin. Brock, his older brother, is also a member of the Wisconsin Badgers men’s ice hockey team. Paul Caufield, born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, was the all-time leading scorer for the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP) from 1988 to 1992.
He returned to UWSP in 2002 as an assistant coach, but departed in 2006 to take over as manager of Ice Hawks Arena. Wayne Caufield, a member of the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame since 2011, played semi-professional hockey from 1963 to 1976 for a variety of teams, most notably the USHL’s Milwaukee Admirals, then spent the next two decades coaching youth hockey and directing hockey clinics in the Milwaukee area. He passed away on July 13, 2018.
