Researchers Developed New Method to Kill Cancer Cells

  • The researchers developed a new, non-invasive method which can kill cancer cells in two hours, an advance that may significantly help people with inoperable or hard-to-reach tumours, as well as young children stricken with the deadly disease on June 27, 2016.
  • The method involves injecting a chemical compound, nitrobenzaldehyde, into the tumour and allowing it to diffuse into the tissue. A beam of light is then aimed at the tissue, causing the cells to become very acidic inside and, essentially, commit suicide.
  • All forms of cancer attempt to make cells acidic on the outside as a way to attract the attention of a blood vessel, which attempts to get rid of the acid, Instead, the cancer latches onto the blood vessel and uses it to make the tumour larger and larger.

World’s Smallest Pacemaker Implanted at Gurugram Hospital

  • The world’s smallest pacemaker was implanted in a 92-year-old man at Medanta Medicity Hospital Gurugarm and it became first hospitals in the country to offer such a heart device on June 4, 2016.
  • The world’s smallest pacemaker was for patients with bradycardia, a condition characterised by a slow or irregular heart , rhythm and the heart are unable to pump, enough oxygen-rich blood to the body during normal activity or exercise, causing dizziness, fatigue, shortness of breath or fainting spells.
  • Unlike traditional pacemakers, the device does not require cardiac wires (leads) or a surgical ‘pocket’ under the skin to deliver a pacing therapy. The device is small enough to be delivered through a catheter and implanted directly into the heart with small tines or prongs, providing a safe alternative to conventional pacemakers.
