The Delhi University is one of the most sought after universities in India for courses at UG and PG levels. Its high standards in teaching and research attracts eminent scholars and students. It  was  established in  1922 as a unitary, teaching and residential university by an Act of the then Central Legislative Assembly. The admission process is rigorous and all colleges under DU follow the same guidelines.

There are two main campus – North Campus and South Campus. Here is a list of Top colleges of DU in North Campus. St. Stephen’s College

St. Stephen’s College is a constituent college of the DU and is a Christian college under Church of North India. It is widely regarded as one of the oldest and most prestigious colleges for arts and sciences in India. It has produced a line of distinguished alumni. It was established by the Cambridge Mission to Delhi. St. Stephen’s High School was founded in 1854 by the Reverend M. J. Jennings, Chaplain of Delhi. After the closure of Government College, Delhi in 1879 because of financial problems, the Bishop of Lahore, urged the Cambridge Mission to fill the breach. With the establishment of the University of Delhi in 1922, the college became a constituent college of the University.

The college’s first premises were in Chandni Chowk, Delhi with three professors, and was an affiliate of the University of Calcutta. Later in 1882, it changed its affiliation to Punjab University. The Punjab University received its charter more than one year after the founding of St. Stephen’s College, which became one of the two institutions first affiliated to it and moved into premises in Kashmiri Gate, Delhi.

Other Activities

The college has various student clubs and societies. These have always played an important role in the life of the college, and are seen as vital to student development. Each academic subject has a society which sponsors lectures and discussions. The popular extra-curricular societies and clubs engage in activities concerned. Namely with debating, dramatics, trekking, film, social service, photography, quizzing and astronomy. Not to mention the continuance of a long tradition, societies such as- Chemistry society, Planning Forum, History Society, Physics Society Gandhi-Ambedkar Study Circle, Informal Discussion Group. The college also publishes department newsletters, college magazines and yearbooks. Several departments also publish their annual journals aside from the college publications. The college English dramatics society, The Shakespeare Society, is amongst the most famous clubs in the institution. Their history dates back to the turn of the 20th century. The Shakespeare Society has had a long tradition of performing at least one Shakespeare play annually.

Kirori Mal College (KMC)

Kirori Mal College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Delhi, located in the North Campus DU. It was established in 1954. The college offers undergraduate and graduate courses in science, arts, and commerce. This college started as Nirmala College by American Jesuits in the wake of partition, located on Qutub Road. The trust founded by Seth Kirori Mal took over the college. This was due to intractable problems relating to the staff in the period following the partition. The college shifted to its present campus on 1 February 1954.The college celebrated its Golden Jubilee in February 2004.

It offers extracurricular activities and is known for theatre, music and art. Students and alumni of this college are often called Kirorians. One of the most prestigious colleges of University of Delhi, it admits students with high academic cut-offs. Also the college provides facilities for hockey, cricket, football, badminton, table tennis, basketball, athletics, boxing and chess. Kirori Mal College has a spectacular history in sports. It holds the record for having won five first positions in a single year (including three major games) in DU Inter-College tournaments. Hindu College is another college under the affiliation of DU and was founded in 1899. The college offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in science, humanities and social sciences and commerce. The college is also among the oldest colleges in Delhi. It is ranked among the top colleges in India for humanities, science and commerce with more than 100 faculty members.Also, it has been awarded the ‘Star College’ status for the Department of Biotechnology, by the Ministry of Science and Technology of India. Irrespective of its name, students from all religions are admitted.

Hindu College was founded in 1899 by Krishan Das Ji Gur Wale in the backdrop of the nationalist struggle against the British Raj. He wanted the college that would provide nationalist education to the youth, while being non-elitist and non-sectarian. Originally, the college was housed in a humble building in Kinari Bazar, Chandni Chowk. Back then, it was affiliated to Punjab University as there was no university in Delhi at that time. As the college grew, it faced a major crisis in 1902. The Punjab University warned the college that the university would disaffiliate the college if the college failed to get a proper building of its own.

Fortunately, Rai Bahadur Lala Sultan Singh came to rescue the college from this crisis. He donated a part of his historic property, which originally belonged to Colonel James Skinner, at Kashmiri Gate, Delhi, to the college. The college functioned from there till 1953. When the University of Delhi took birth in 1922, Hindu College along with Ramjas College and St. Stephen’s College was subsequently affiliated to the University of Delhi, making them the first three institutions to be affiliated with the university.

DRC or Daulat Ram College is a prestigious college under DU and resides in North Campus. The offers various courses and facilities to students. It has various well-managed laboratories, Library and Reading Room facilities and Placement Cell. The library and Reading Room facilities are open only to students and staff of the college. The College Library possesses an excellent collection of books, journals/periodicals. Also, the College has well equipped and well-managed laboratories for all the Science Courses offered, viz. Biochemistry, Botany, Chemistry, Physics, and Zoology. Not to mention that the Departments of  Nutrition & Health Education, Maths and Psychology also have separate well-equipped labs.

The College has well-equipped Computer Labs with Pentium machines with the latest configuration. Miranda House (MH) is a constituent college for women at the DU and was established in 1948.  This college offers degrees in the sciences and liberal arts. In 2017, the College was rated as the best college in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework. Miranda House was founded in 1948 by the university vice-chancellor, Sir Maurice Gwyer. The foundation stone was laid by Lady Edwina Mountbatten on 7 March in the same year.

The college offers various courses at Undergraduate level like B.A. Honours in Bengali, Economics, English, Geography, Hindi, History, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Sanskrit, Sociology. Also, B.Sc. Honours in Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Zoology. Along with B.Sc.: Life Sciences, Physical Science (Computer Science) and B.El.Ed: (four-year course).

At Postgraduate level courses, students are enrolled for M.A. and M.Sc. programmes in the college. The Classes are held at the respective departments at the university. The M.A. programme has the same subjects that are offered as at the B.A. Honours level except for Political Science, Geography, and Sociology. Also, a degree in M.A. in Mathematics is offered in the college.M.Sc. the programme has the same subjects are offered as at the B.Sc. Honours level. Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies is a constituent college of the University of Delhi falling under the Faculty of Management Sciences, imparting education in the fields of management, finance and information technology. College of Business Studies (CBS) is one of a premier institution under BBA colleges in Delhi University. It was established in August 1987 by the Delhi Administration on the initiation of UGC and the Ministry of Human Resources.

This college has now joined the list of the prestigious colleges of North Campus of Delhi University after shifting to its new campus at Rohini, North Delhi.

CBS or Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies was the first undergraduate management school under the aegis of the DU. Earlier the college was named “COLLEGE OF BUSINESS STUDIES” but later the college was rechristened as ‘ Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies’ in 1997. This was done to pay homage to Indian revolutionary Sukhdev Thapar who along with Bhagat Singh and Shivaram Rajguru became part of independence folklore for their sacrifice.

CBS initially offered only one course – BBS (Bachelor of Business Studies) when it started in 1987. In 1991, the College of Business Studies became the first college in Delhi University to adopt the semester system, for its BBS course. The semester system was then implemented in all courses across the university in 2010. In 1999, the college became the only college in the country to offer the BFIA programme, a core Finance based programme spread over six semesters. Bsc. Computer science has been converted into a B.tech degree. Post-Graduate Diploma Course in Computer Application (PGDCA) was offered until 2012. This college is also ranked high for its extracurricular activities and societies for almost every area of interest and also for those who have no interests at all. Ramjas College is a college of the University of Delhi located in North Campus of the DU. It is one of the first three colleges established under University of Delhi. Also, Ramjas is widely regarded as the Best and Finest Co-Educational colleges of the world. SRCC was established by educationist and industrialist, late Lala Shri Ram. The institute was established first in Daryaganj and shifted to its present location in the North Campus, Delhi University in 1957. The present location is a 17 acres (69,000 m2) campus with educational and recreational areas.

Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) is one of the premier colleges affiliated to the University of Delhi. It grants undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in various courses under DU. The SRCC was founded in 1926 in New Delhi. It is one of the most prestigious and oldest institutes of higher learning in Commerce and Economics. Not to mention it is consistently ranked as the number one institute in these fields.

Also, the cutoffs required to gain admission in this premier institute are often much higher than other colleges of DU. In like manner, SRCC enjoys an elite status. Because of its status uniquely as the most sought after commerce college in India. Also, it has established a reputation for attracting the brightest students in the country.

Rather, the institute offers courses in the commerce and economics streams only. The undergraduate offered are – Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) and Bachelor of Arts – Economics (Honours). Indraprastha College for Women also known as Indraprastha College or IP College is the oldest women’s college in Delhi. It was established in 1924 and is affiliated to University of Delhi. IP college resides on the North Campus of DU and offers graduate and post-graduate courses in Liberal Arts, Commerce, Literature, Computer Science, Multimedia Media & Mass Communication etc. Not to mention, this is among the prestigious colleges of India.

The origins of IP College lie in the Indraprastha Girls School. After founding of the University of Delhi in 1922, IP college was recognised it as a constituent college. Degree courses were introduced in 1930s and in 1938, the University recognised I.P. College as a degree college. After its existence in Chhipiwara during its early years, the college moved to Chandrawali Bhawan, Civil Lines. It moved again to Alipur House at Alipur Road (now Sham Nath Road), the former office of the commander-in-chief in 1938, near Kashmiri Gate, where it is today.

Indraprastha College is the only college of Delhi University to offer the Bachelor in Mass Media and Mass Communication (BMMMC) degree.  The college has a fully equipped studio for in-house training and production. It has several computer laboratories and a spacious library with a lift for PH access. A book bank and customised software and reading materials in Braille are available in the library. The ICT center with 80 computers is also in the library. An Audio-Visual Resource Center is attached to it.

Hansraj College

Hansraj College (HRC) is a constituent college of the University of Delhi, in New Delhi, India. The college was founded in 1948 by the D.A.V. College Managing Committee HRC has produced notable alumni who are prominent leaders in their fields nationally and internationally. It is the first college of Delhi University and the first Central University college to hoist a Monumental National Flag in its premises. This flag was initiated by Flag Foundation Of India (NGO). Not to mention, that the flag was hoisted on 25 January 2017, by Hansraj Alumnus and Founder of Flag Foundation Of India, Mr. Naveen Jindal.

HRC became co-educational in 1978 and offers courses in Science, Liberal Arts, and Commerce. Hansraj has been ranked 2nd best college of Delhi university after Stephens in science and for commerce after SRCC. It is one of the largest institutions of D.A.V group, which runs and manages over 700 institutions in India. In addition, for years Hans Raj College has been ranked among the Top-10 colleges of India in all three disciplines.

The standard admissions process of Delhi University is followed at HRC. In order to apply to this college for an undergraduate course, the student has to fill out a central form that is released by the university itself. After a few weeks of the deadline of the forms, Delhi University publicly releases cut off lists for each individual course for all of the undergraduate courses across the university. A student wishing to apply for a course at Hansraj looks at the cut-off and matches his or her 12th-grade percentage with the same. If the 12th-grade percentage is equal to or greater than the percentage in the cut-off, the student is eligible for admission. The student then goes to the college, and takes the required steps to attain a spot in the college.
