Shanti Bhushan: Who Was He?
Bhushan was an active member of both the Congress and the Janata parties for a significant portion of his adult life.
He held the position of Union Law Minister in the government of Morarji Desai from the 14th of July 1977 to the 2nd of April 1980. In addition to that, he was a member of the Rajya Sabha during that time.
In his capacity as India’s Minister of Law, he was responsible for putting forward the country’s Forty-fourth Constitutional Amendment, which was ultimately successful in having certain provisions of the Forty-second Amendment overturned.
In the year 1980, Shanti Bhushan laid the groundwork for what would become the well-known non-governmental organization (NGO) Centre for Public Interest Litigation.
Since that time, the organization has presented the Supreme Court with a number of notable PILs. He initiated the “Campaign for Judicial Accountability and Judicial Reform” along with his son Prashant Bhushan, who is an activist lawyer (CJAR).
In 1980, Shanti Bhushan became a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. In 1986, he left the BJP as a result of the party’s refusal to consider his recommendations on an electoral petition.
Soon after the Aam Aadmi Party was formally established on November 26, 2012, he joined the party, making him one of the very first members of the organization.
In 2018, he submitted a petition to the Supreme Court requesting that the “master of roster” system be changed, but the court did not grant his request.
Shanti Bhushan: Death Cause
According to a source with close ties to the family, he had not been keeping well for some time before he passed away at his residence in Delhi.
In the landmark case of Raj Narain vs. Indira Nehru Gandhi, which took place in June 1975 in Allahabad High Court, Gandhi was barred from running for office for a period of six years.
In his petition, freedom warrior and politician Raj Narain accused Gandhi of engaging in fraudulent electoral methods. Narain ran against Gandhi in the 1971 Lok Sabha elections for the seat of Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh, but he was ultimately unsuccessful.
Gandhi had appealed the ruling from the lower court all the way up to the Supreme Court. It set into motion a chain of occurrences that culminated in the declaration of a state of emergency on June 25, 1975.
Bhushan, who was also a prominent counsel, was a member of the Morarji Desai government from 1977 until 1979 and served as the law minister during that time.
Bhushan, whose sons Jayant and Prashant Bhushan are leading lawyers, was active in the legal profession until recently and had argued on a PIL in the Supreme Court seeking a court-monitored probe into the deal for Rafale fighter jets.

The political and legal communities were quick to offer their condolences. Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote in a message on Twitter that “Shri Shanti Bhushan Ji will be remembered for his contribution to the legal field and his commitment for speaking for the poor.” Saddened by the news of his passing. “I came to know him very well well before the Emergency when he visited Madras and also appeared for M Karunanidhi, the then Chief Minister, before the Sarkaria Commission…,” the former Attorney General K. K. Venugopal stated about Karunanidhi. Together with him, I had made my appearance. However, after discovering that the Commission had a somewhat antagonistic attitude, we decided to withdraw from the matter. After the Janata administration was removed from office, he called me to Delhi to serve as an additional solicitor general. Fali S. Nariman, a distinguished jurist and senior advocate, stated, “He was a very dear friend of mine. I am quite upset to learn that information. When we last spoke on the phone a few months ago, he did not sound like he was doing very well at all.
