Berhalter made his debut for the United States national team on October 15, 1994, against Saudi Arabia. Also, Berhalter played an important role for the United States at the 2002 World Cup, filling in for the injured Jeff Agoos and starting the final two games, becoming the first Crystal Palace player to play in a World Cup match.
