Career
Tim Sylvia and Frank Mir competed for the vacant UFC Heavyweight Championship at UFC 48 on June 19, 2004. Herb Dean was the referee. At 0:50 (50 seconds) of round one, he called a halt to the bout after seeing Sylvia’s right forearm shatter due to an armbar.
Despite Dean’s warnings, “Pause, pause, pause! The battle is over!” Once free of the armbar, Sylvia began to dispute with Dean, who kept telling him, “It’s completely broken! Your arm has been broken “.
Sylvia disputed again in the post-fight interview that his arm was broken; nevertheless, the slow-motion video showed the break occurring, and an X-Ray that evening revealed extensive damage to Sylvia’s arm, necessitating surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation. Actually, I believe he is the best “with reference to his win over Mike Swick and Paulo Thiago. He also stated that he never asks Dean after the Mir vs. Sylvia bout was stopped.
“When Herb Dean does something stupid, I don’t even question it. I’m watching for the replay. This person sees things that I don’t see while sitting in front of the display.”
At UFC 169, he sparked controversy by stopping the main event fight Renan Baro vs. Urijah Faber for the UFC bantamweight title. Dean was then chastised by UFC president Dana White, who stated that “he made a mistake.”
In addition, he was highly chastised for a late stoppage of a fight between Khalid Murtazaliev and C. B. Dollaway at UFC Fight Night: Hunt vs. Oleinik.
