India Japan Signed Social Security Agreement

• India and Japan signed a social security agreement and benefit thousands of Indian and Japanese professionals and skilled workers working in the two countries on July 20, 2016.

• The pact will help avoid double social security contributions. In other words, an Indian worker on a short-term contract in Japan will be exempt from making a social security contribution there.

• The same applies to Japanese workers in India. This exemption will be provided only if the Indian worker is covered under the social security system of India and continues to pay his or her contribution during the period of overseas contract.

Union Government Approved Air Service Agreement between India and Mozambique

• The Union Cabinet approved signing of the Air Services Agreement between India and Mozambique to promote the air connectivity on July 19, 2016.

• Under the agreement, airlines of the two countries will be allowed to set-up offices in each others’ country for the purpose of promotion and sale of air services. The airlines of India and Mozambique can operate to multiple destinations in the other countries.

• The designated airlines would have equal and fair opportunity to operate the services on specific routes. The draft text of the Air Services Agreement (ASA) has been finalised in consultation with Ministry of Finance (Department of Revenue/Department of Economic Affairs), Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Law & Justice (Department of Legal Affairs).

Union Government Approved MoU Signed between India and the Swiss Confederation for Cooperation in Skill Development

• The Union Cabinet on July 19, 2016 approved for a Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) signed between India and the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation of the Swiss Confederation for cooperation in skill development.

• The MoU broadly focuses on capacity building and exchange of best practices in the area of skill development. The MoU envisions the establishment of Joint Working Group (JWG) to create, monitor and review the implementation framework for the MoU.

• The MoU will establish a framework for bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the area of skill development and will formalise and deepen this partnership.

Netherlands and Uttar Pradesh Signed ; Agreement for Skill Development Centre for Farmers

• The Uttar Pradesh government on July 14, 2016 signed an MoU with the Netherlands for cooperation in areas such as cleaning of water resources, including river Yamuna in Agra and solid waste management.

• The move aims at cooperation in areas like solid waste management, urban development and infrastructure, water management and supply, cleaning of water resources, lakes and ponds, sewage treatment, transport management and infrastructure, besides land reforms in 1500 acre in the Ganga basin in Kanpur.

• The MoU which will remain operational for the next three years will also see cooperation in areas like development of smart cities, cycle track, power capability in industry, agriculture and dairy.

Bangladesh Amended Extradition Treaty with India

• Bangladesh Cabinet approved amendment to an existing extradition treaty with India, easing legal formalities to repatriate wanted criminals in their respective countries.

• The amendment would ease the extradition process. It would just require a warrant to be issued by any court or tribunal of either of the countries which seek to get a suspect back home.

• Until now, the extradition procedure demanded evidence of wanted persons’ guilt along with the warrant to be returned to their own country.
