Nawaz Sharif Inaugurated Gwadar Port

  • The revamped Gwadar port, a strategic deep seaport in the $46 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, became operational in Pakistan’s restive Balochistan after a Chinese commercial ship laden with around 250 containers set off for West Asia and Africa on November 15, 2016.
  • Gwadar Port is a warm-water, deep-sea port situated on the Arabian Sea. The port features prominently in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) plan, and is considered to be a crucial link between the ambitious One Belt, One Road and’Maritime Silk Road projects.
  • Gwadar Port is sitatuated on the shores of the Arabian Sea in the city of Gwadar, located in the Pakistani province of Balochistan. The port is located 533 km from Pakistan’s largest city, Karachi, and is approximately 120 km from the Iranian border.

20 Nations Signed Framework Agreement of International Solar Alliance

  • On November 14, 2016, over 20 countries, including Brazil and France, became signatories to the framework agreement of the International Solar Alliance—an initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the CoP21, Paris climate summit last year.
  • The framework agreement of International Solar Alliance (ISA) was opened for signatures on the sidelines of CoP22 with Environment Minister Anil Madhav Dave saying that with this legal framework in place, the ISA will be a major international body headquartered in India.
  • The Framework Agreement of ISA was opened for signature in Marrakech on the sidelines of the CoP22 to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
  • This will make ISA an innovative, action oriented and sui generis international and inter-governmental treaty-based organisation that will be registered under Article-102 of the UN charter.

‘Festival of India’ began in Oman

  • A Festival of India began in Oman to showcase the countries diverse culture on November 14, 2016.
  • The event will witness classical and folk dances, music shows, Indian cuisine fest and exhibition on Islamic art calligraphy, among others.
  • The festival, which will come to an end on March 24 next year, will be held in four cities—Muscat, Sur, Sohar and Salalah.

Colombia’s Government, FARC Rebels Signed Modified Peace Agreement

  • Colombia’s government and its largest rebel group signed a new, modified peace accord following the surprise rejection of an earlier deal by voters in a referendum on November 13,2016.
  • The latest agreement aims to address some of the concerns of opponents of the original accord, the deal was too lenient on a rebel group that had kidnapped and committed war crimes.
  • President Juan Manuel Santos and the Revolutionary Anned Forces of Colombia inked an initial peace deal on September 26 amid international fanfare after more than four years of negotiations. But, voters rejected it on October 2 by just 55000 votes, dealing a stunning setback to Santos who won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to end Colombia’s conflict.

Australia Ratified Paris Climate Change Agreement

  • Australia ratified the Paris climate change agreement, despite concerns US President-elect Donald Trump will withdraw support once in office on November 9, 2016.
  • The 2015 agreement came into force last week and has been ratified by 103 countries and covers 70% of global emission.

Paris Climate Agreement Entered into Force

  • The historic Paris agreement to address climate change will enter into force on November 4, 2016. The agreement provides that it shall enter into force 30 days after 55 countries, representing 55% of global emissions, have deposited their instruments of ratification, acceptance or accession with the Secretary-General.
  • The agreement now enter into force in time for the Marrakech Climate Conference {CoP 22) in Morocco in November, where countries will convene the first Meeting of the Parties to the agreement. The Paris agreement, adopted on December 12, 2015 in Paris, marks a watershed moment in global efforts to address climate change.
