As Kara got too close to the man, he instantly put a gun to her neck and shoved her into a storage container made of plastic in the trunk of his car.
She was fortunate in that she used her wits and began keeping track of data about her captor from that point on, including the serial number of the container that she was held captive in.
The man took Kara in his car to his apartment, where he restrained her by gagging, handcuffing her wrists, and binding her ankles.
After making her smoke marijuana against her will, he chained her to his bed and proceeded to sexually assault her over the course of the following eighteen hours.
In spite of the cruel and inhumane things that the adult did to the 15-year-old girl, she managed to keep her senses intact and discreetly observe as much of her environment as she could manage to take in.
She was able to commit the names of his dentist and doctor, which were written on the refrigerator, to memory as a result of her observations. Kara succeeded in gaining her captor’s trust over time, and she even swept the floor of his apartment to make him feel more at home.
The following morning, he slept next to her until she had quietly freed her hands and one leg and was tiptoeing outside.
When Kara observed two men sitting in a car in the parking lot, she made a beeline for them and promptly asked them to transport her to the police station.
The young woman then related her incident to the authorities and led them back to the apartment complex where her captor lived, where a maintenance man assisted them in locating his residence.
But, by the time the police arrived at his house, he had already departed the scene. In spite of this, the investigators discovered newspaper clippings hidden in a locker within the flat that identified the man as Richard Evonitz, who was responsible for the rape and murder of three young women between the years 1996 and 1997.
Soon after, he was able to be located in Sarasota, Florida, and after a high-speed automobile chase between him and the police, he ultimately ended his life by shooting himself.

She was also successful in gaining his trust to the point where she was able to put him to sleep by offering to assist him in some way, in this case by sweeping the floor of his apartment.
Kara waited for him to fall asleep before attempting to break herself from her restraints and slipping out the back door undetected.
She sprinted to the office of the manager, where she saw them placing a call to the police.
Her captor had already fled by the time the police arrived, but they were able to determine from evidence found in his house that he was headed for Sarasota, which is located in the state of Florida.
They were able to connect him to a number of other instances of missing people cases as well.
He was confronted and ultimately committed suicide in Sarasota, where he was apprehended by law enforcement.
Richard Evonitz: Where is He Now?
Richard Evonitz, who was 38 years old at the time of the attack, was a native of South Carolina and had worked as a manager at a Jiffy Lube location in the past. After leaving that job, he joined the United States Navy and served as a sonar technician.
Upon his discharge from the service, Evonitz declared bankruptcy and divorced his second wife; by the year 2002, he was employed at a company that manufactured air compressors. In the course of his life, Evonitz committed and was suspected of a number of sexual offences; for example, in 1987 he was sentenced to three years of probation for masturbating in front of a girl who was just 15 years old.
After going through what she did, Kara decided to join the organisation that looked into her case and now works there as a school resource officer, an investigator for sex crimes and child abuse, and a victim’s advocate.
She is now known as Kara Robinson Chamberlain and she changed her name after getting married and having two children with her husband.
