Career

Hernandez’s gymnastics career began at the age of 12 when she finished 11th in the junior level at the 2012 U.S. Classic. She qualified for the National Championships in St. Louis as a result of her victory in the competition, where she finished 21st.

She won a silver medal at the WOGA Classic in 2013. A few months later, she competed in the American Classica in Huntsville, Texas, where she finished first in floor exercise, second in all-around, and third on balance beam and vault. She was later named to the United States junior national team and travelled to Chicago to compete in the United States Classic. She finished sixth overall and first in the floor exercise. In August 2013, she earned silver in the junior all-around discipline at the National Championships. She was chosen to represent the United States at the Junior Japan International in Yokohama in September, where she finished third, and then at the International Junior Mexican Cup with a team of three other girls. They came in first place in the team competition.

Hernandez had a more difficult 2014 after breaking her wrist early in the year. Though she was able to return to competition swiftly, she then dislocated a kneecap, necessitating a six-month recovery period. She didn’t return to training until the fall, and she was only able to join the year’s last U.S. training camp in November.

Also, she recovered well, though, and was nominated to the United States team for the 2015 City of Jesolo Trophy. She was crowned junior all-around champion there. She won another junior all-around title as well as the vault and uneven bars individual categories at the 2015 U.S. Classic. She won the junior all-around title at the National Championships. Her success that year earned her a spot at the 2015 International Junior Japan Meet in Yokohama, where she took first place in the all-around, floor exercise, and vault.
