Louis William “Lou” Merloni (born April 6, 1971) is a former Major League Baseball player and radio personality. Merloni was scouted by ‘Buzz’ Bowers, and he played for his hometown Boston Red Sox from 1998 to 2003.
Merloni is well-known in the area for his frequent trips between the Red Sox and their Triple-A affiliate, the Pawtucket Red Sox, dubbed the “Merloni Shuttle.”
He also spent time with the San Diego Padres, the Cleveland Indians, and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Since his birth in Framingham, Massachusetts, Merloni has been dubbed “Sweet Lou” by Boston fans.

On May 15, 1998, Merloni hit his first major-league home run in Fenway Park, a 3-run home run off of José Rosado. During his time in Boston, his frequent reassignments between the Red Sox and their Triple-A affiliate Pawtucket Red Sox prompted local sportswriters to coin the term “Merloni Shuttle” to describe Boston’s player transfers between the clubs.
Merloni gained popularity among Boston fans due to his local roots and dependable pinch hitting. As a pinch hitter, Merloni hit.294 in his career.
Merloni was called up to the Cleveland Indians on May 17, 2006, after beginning the season in Triple-A. Merloni agreed to terms with the Oakland A’s for the 2007 season. He spent the season with the Sacramento River Cats, the A’s Triple-A affiliate. Merloni was named Most Valuable Player in the 2007 Bricktown Showdown after leading the River Cats to a 7-1 victory over the Richmond Braves.

Radio Career
Merloni began appearing as a co-host on WEEI-Big AM’s Show in March 2008. He joined the New England Sports Network (NESN) on May 27, 2008, as a commentator on the Red Sox pre-game and post-game shows. Merloni decided not to return to NESN after the 2008 season. During the 2009 season, Merloni was hired as an analyst and reporter by Comcast SportsNet New England.
Merloni began co-hosting WEEI’s Mut and Merloni with Mike Mutnansky on February 28, 2011. After Mike Mutnansky was forced out of the show due to low ratings, Lou was joined by former New England Patriots tight end Christian Fauria and Tim Benz, a former beat reporter for the Pittsburgh Steelers and radio show host in Pittsburgh, to form “Midday’s with MFB” on May 27, 2014.
Merloni began working as a part-time color analyst on Red Sox radio in 2013, working alongside play-by-play announcers Joe Castiglione and Dave O’Brien on select games. In October of that year, he joined Castiglione and O’Brien on WEEI for the ALCS and World Series broadcasts.
