‘Shut the country’: Pro-choice activists march TOPLESS at Minnesota Lynx vs New York Liberty game

On Tuesday, June 7, a group of pro-choice protesters ran onto the court at Barclays Center during a WNBA game between the New York Liberty and the Minnesota Lynx. Some of the women ran down to the court in the middle of the game without their tops on, exposing their chests. Others held signs in support of the Roe v. Wade decision.

People took videos of the protesters from Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights marching to the game. Some of them were covered in green paint and waving abortion rights posters. In the end, security helped the women get out of the building. The NYPD says that no charges were made. Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights held a protest at a Mets-Dodgers baseball game in Los Angeles over the weekend. The protests started when people heard that the US Supreme Court might overturn the historic Roe v. Wade decision about abortion. The draft memo, which was leaked to Politico and made public last month, says that a majority of the Supreme Court is willing to overturn the Roe v. Wade decision, which legalized abortion across the country more than 50 years ago.

Since then, the federal government has used the Constitution to protect the right to have an abortion until about 23 or 24 weeks. Colin Kerrigan, a filmmaker, posted a video of the staged protest with the caption, “It was a vibe to see protesters at Barclays being dragged past Ben Simmons at my first WNBA game.”

After the game, a group called Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights posted a picture of the protesters who had caused trouble and wrote, “This was the group we wanted to reach. We are not protesting to change the minds and hearts of fascists who hate women. No. We are calling on the MILLIONS of people who support #abortionrights to stop the overturning of #RoeVWade. YOU! Nothing like before. Close down the country!”

“Overturn Roe?” read one notice. “Hell, no!” read one, while “Abortion on demand and without apology” was written on another.

One person tweeted about how protesters got a standing ovation during the game, “WTF to, HELL YEAHHH!! Tonight, the protesters at Barclays are getting a standing ovation! people, read the fine print.”

This is one of several protests that activists have held at sports events in the past few months. Last week, during a French Open semifinal match between Casper Ruud and Marin Cilic, a climate change activist tied themselves to the net while wearing a shirt that said, “We have 1028 days left.”

A fan once stuck himself to the court at a Minnesota Timberwolves game to protest team owner Glen Taylor, whose egg farm killed animals because of an outbreak of bird flu.
