PBS Confirms Release Date For New 1950s Crime Drama ‘Magpie Murders’

Magpie Murders will premiere on PBS on October 16 at 9 p.m.

It has been revealed when Magpie Murders will air on American television. The creator of the new “crime drama with a twist,” Anthony Horowitz, adapted his own acclaimed 2016 novel for the screen.

Lesley Manville, well known for her roles in World on Fire, Mum, and Harlots, stars in the series, which premiered in the United Kingdom earlier this year.

Magpie Murders is described as “a murder mystery within a murder mystery, spanning two historical periods (the 1950s and current Britain), with a cast portraying diverse persons in separate fictional worlds.”

The latest mystery novel by Alan Conway is given to editor Susan Ryeland, played by Manville, who has no idea how much it will change her life.

Magpie Murders will show in the United States this fall as part of the PBS Masterpiece Mystery season. The seventh season of Grantchester and brand-new episodes of Endeavour are also included in the forthcoming season of British criminal drama television.

It will be shown alongside the launch of Nicola Walker’s new television series Annika and the return of Miss Scarlet and the Duke.

Lesley Manville portrayed Susan in the first footage from the new production, which was released by Masterpiece PBS in July.

Susan’s favorite novel is missing its final chapter, making it “a whodunit without the end,” as Susan laments in the video.

However, as you might expect, this is only the beginning of her interaction with this fascinating book.

In a What To Watch For interview, Manville discussed playing the “amazing” character of Susan. “She is a strong, independent lady with her own set of rules.” She hasn’t behaved how most people would have expected, but I genuinely like her as a person.”

Is Magpie Murders Based On A True Story?

Magpie Murders, Anthony Horowitz’s debut novel in the Susan Ryeland series, was released in 2016. The plot revolves around the murder of a mystery writer and employs a story inside a story framework.

The novel has been adapted into a six-part television series and translated into a number of additional languages.

Fans who are concerned about how the plot will play out on television should rest assured that the script is in the best hands available.

“Magpie Murders is my best-selling book, and adapting it wasn’t easy. According to Horowitz, the end result will be a completely unique story that will both enchant and astonish viewers.

For the first time in the UK, Orion published Magpie Murders in hardback and e-book editions on October 6, 2016. Both Orion and BrillianceAudio released an audiobook adaptation read by Allan Corduner and Samantha Bond at the same time.

Magpie Murders Plot Summary

Horowitz came up with the idea for the Magpie Murders during the first season premiere of Midsomer Murders in 1997.

According to his claims, he intended for the book to be “a sort of thesis on the entire genre of murder mystery writing, and more than just murder mystery fiction.” How these books are made; how the authors come up with their ideas.”

The book was published in the United States the following year by Harper and HarperAudio in hardcover, e-book, and audiobook versions. Paperback editions were released in the United Kingdom and the United States in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

In the years thereafter, the book has been translated into other languages, including Korean and Japanese (2018).

According to a July 2020 Deadline story, the novel will be adapted into a six-part drama series for PBS’ Masterpiece, which will air in the United States and on BritBox in the United Kingdom.

Horowitz will pen the script, which will be produced by Masterpiece, Jill Green, and Eleventh Hour Films.

Lesley Manville plays Susan, and Tim McMullan was cast to play Atticus Pünd after Timothy Spall dropped out due to scheduling difficulties.

Daniel Mays, Alexandros Logothetis, Jude Hill, Matthew Beard, and Claire Rushbrook round out the cast.
