2018
Backlund signed a six-year contract extension with the Flames on February 16, 2018.
On August 11, 2018, Backlund married his fiancée Frida Engström in Sweden.
2016
Backlund continued to develop in 2016-17, becoming one of the NHL’s top two-way players. Rookie Matthew Tkachuk was slotted in on the left side of Backlund and Frolk at the discretion of new head coach Glen Gulutzan, forming a line dubbed the “3M Line” by fans and media. In 2016-17, Matthew, Mikael, and Michael formed one of the NHL’s most potent lines, combining for 145 points, the most of any Flames line.
Also, Backlund provided the most offence to that line, surpassing his career highs with 22 goals and 53 points, good for second and third on the Flames. He also played well beyond the regular season, scoring once and assisting twice in four playoff games. Backlund’s defensive play, however, began to garner attention around the NHL in 2016-17, when he finished fourth in voting for the Frank J. Selke Trophy, which is awarded each year to the NHL’s best defensive forward.
2015
Backlund signed a three-year, $10.725 million contract extension with Calgary on June 20, 2015. Backlund had his most productive year yet in 2015-16, when he was put on a line with free-agent acquisition Michael Frolk, surpassing the 20-goal and 40-point plateaus for the first time in his career.
His final tally was 21 goals and 26 assists for a total of 47 points. While making significant contributions in the offensive zone, Backlund also established himself as a defensive catalyst, forming a penalty kill tag-team with Frolk; the two of them combined for five short-handed goals this season.
2014
Backlund has represented Sweden on several occasions, winning two silver medals with the Swedes at the World Junior Championship and a bronze, silver, and gold medal with the Swedes at the World Championship.
Backlund struggled slightly in 2014-15 due to injuries and trade rumours, but the Flames surprisingly soared up the standings en route to their first playoff berth in six years. Backlund’s 10 goals and 27 points were only 11th and 12th on the Flames, but he only appeared in 52 regular-season games. He struggled even more in the playoffs, recording only one goal and one assist in 11 games.
However, Backlund’s one goal was significant, as it came in overtime of Game 3 of the Flames’ second-round series against the Anaheim Ducks, giving Calgary its first win past the first round in 13 years.
2013
Backlund signed a two-year, $3 million contract extension with the Flames in July 2013. That season, he set career highs in every offensive category, finishing third on the Flames in goals (18) and fourth in points (41). (39).
While his teammates regressed to their worst finish in team history, Backlund established himself as one of the team’s top offensive threats.
2012
Following the season, the Flames re-signed Backlund to a one-year contract worth $725,000 for the 2012-13 season. However, with the start of the season delayed due to a labour dispute, Backlund returned to Sweden for the duration of the lockout. He returned to Västers and appeared in 23 games for the team, scoring 12 goals and 30 points before returning to North America after the NHL and its players reached an agreement.
Backlund expressed his desire to return to Calgary and “show everybody I can play way better” after his performance with Västers. Backlund had a solid NHL season after returning to Calgary, missing 16 games but still averaging one point every two games for the first time in his career. His eight goals and sixteen points ranked eighth and tenth on a rebuilding Flames team that missed the playoffs by a wide margin.
2011
Backlund was plagued by injuries in 2011-12. He was expected to centre the Flames’ top line between Jarome Iginla and Alex Tanguay, but he broke his finger in training camp, requiring surgery twice and keeping him out for the first six weeks of the season.
He was then injured in a mid-February game while attempting to confront a Vancouver Canucks player who he believed had injured a teammate. The injury ended his season, and he only scored 11 points in 41 games.
2010
Backlund began the 2009-10 season with the Abbotsford Heat, the Flames’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. He was called up to the NHL squad on January 26, 2010, and scored his first NHL goal on January 28 against the Phoenix Coyotes.
He spent the season splitting time between the AHL and the NHL, scoring 32 points in 54 games with Abbotsford and ten points in 23 games with Calgary. Though he spent the majority of the 2010-11 season in Calgary, Backlund struggled offensively early on and was sat out of six consecutive games as a healthy scratch before being sent to Abbotsford on a conditioning stint.

Backlund signed an entry-level contract with the Flames after the 2007-08 season.
He impressed during rookie camp but did not fare as well during main training camp, and he began the 2008-09 season on loan for Västers in HockeyAllsvenskan. Following his success at the 2009 World Junior Championships, he returned to Calgary and made his NHL debut against the New York Islanders on January 8, 2009.
The Flames quickly assigned him to the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League (WHL) for the rest of the 2008-09 season. Backlund tied teammate Jamie Benn for the League lead with 13 goals in 19 games for the Rockets in the 2009 WHL playoffs, as Kelowna defeated the Calgary Hitmen in the final to win the Ed Chynoweth Cup.
2008
Backlund was a member of the Swedish junior team that won back-to-back silver medals at the World Junior Championships in 2008 and 2009, losing both times to Canada.
