Emily and her pals founded the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association (PWHPA) in 2019 to promote women’s equality, fairness, and opportunity.

PWHPA was founded by nearly 125 of the world’s greatest hockey players to encourage equality, justice, and opportunity in women’s professional hockey. Furthermore, its purpose is to create viable leagues for women that pay living wages to players and give suitable elite-level resources.

Playing career

Matheson began his junior career with the Lac St. Louis Lions in the Quebec Midget AAA league from 2009 to 2011. Matheson subsequently left to play with the USHL’s Dubuque Fighting Saints, where he topped all defensemen in scoring in 2011-12. He then committed to play for the NCAA’s Boston College beginning in 2012-13. He stated that the potential to develop as a player in the USHL and the NCAA was his motive for leaving his native Quebec.

Matheson was chosen to Hockey East’s All-Rookie Team after his freshman year at Boston College. Matheson was named to the Hockey East All-First Team as well as the NCAA All-Second Team East as decided by the AHCA during his second season. On April 30, he also elected to stay at Boston College for the 2014-15 season, despite reports that he would leave to join with his drafted team, the Florida Panthers.
