Early years

Edwards spent his early life in Atlanta, Georgia. When he was three years old, his father gave him the name “Ant-Man.” Edwards played football as a running back, quarterback, and cornerback for a long time when he was young. He played youth football for the Atlanta Vikings and was one of the best Pop Warner running backs in the country by age 10. But Edwards switched his focus to basketball because, after watching his brothers play the sport, he “thought it looked more fun.” He and his brothers played basketball with their grandmother a lot. When he was in the ninth grade, he started training with Justin Holland, a former college basketball player for Liberty who now runs a basketball training business in Atlanta.

Years in high school

Rivals thought of Edwards as a four-star recruit in 2016 because of how well he played for the Atlanta Xpress 15-under Amateur Athletic Union team. He began playing high school basketball for Therrell High School in Atlanta as a member of the 2019 class. [6] Early in January 2017, Edwards moved to Atlanta and joined the 2020 class at Holy Spirit Preparatory School. He moved to Holy Spirit Preparatory so that he could do better in school because it had “small class sizes and support to help that.”

In March 2018, Edwards helped Holy Spirit Preparatory defeat The Heritage School for the Georgia Independent School Association (GISA) Class AAA state championship. He reclassified back to the 2019 class in November 2018 after seeing academic improvement. Even though Edwards scored 27 points for his team during his senior year, The Heritage School won the GISA Class AAA title. He averaged 29 points, nine rebounds, and two assists per game by the end of the season. Edwards was named to the first team of USA Today All-USA and the fourth team of MaxPreps All-American. In March and April of 2019, he played in the McDonald’s All-American Game and the Jordan Brand Classic.

College Career

On November 5, 2019, Edwards played his first game for the Georgia Bulldogs, a 91–72 win over Western Carolina. He scored 24 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and stole four balls. It was the most points scored by a Georgia freshman in his or her first game since 1979, when Dominique Wilkins became a Basketball Hall of Famer. In a 93–85 loss to third-ranked Michigan State at the Maui Invitational on November 26, he scored a season-high 37 points, 33 of which came in the second half. He also had six rebounds, four steals, and three blocks. Edwards became the first freshman at Georgia since Jacky Dorsey in 1975 to score at least 37 points in a game. In his last game at the tournament, against NCAA Division II team Chaminade, he scored 24 points and made the shot that won the game.

On February 1, 2020, Edwards led his team to a 63–48 win over Texas A&M with 29 points and 15 rebounds. In his next game, a loss to Florida by a score of 81–75, he led all scorers with 32 points. On February 26, Edwards helped his team beat South Carolina 94–90 in overtime. He scored 36 points, grabbed seven rebounds, gave out four assists, and stole four balls. He averaged 19.1 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game as a freshman. Edwards had the most points on his team and was the top freshman scorer in the country. He was named All-SEC second team and SEC Freshman of the Year. During the season, Edwards was named the SEC Freshman of the Week four times, which is the most in the program’s history. He was also one of the five finalists for the Jerry West Award, which goes to the best shooting guard in college basketball.

Edwards signed up for the 2020 NBA draft on March 20, 2020, in the spring of his freshman year. He was one of the most talked-about prospects in his class. He got an agent and gave up his last year of college basketball eligibility.
