International Career

The Scotland under-19 national team called up Oli McBurnie for a training camp in September 2013, and he was called up to the Scotland under-19 squad in November 2014.

He made his debut in a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands and was called up to the senior national squad for the first time by new Scotland manager Alex McLeish in March 2018.

He made his full international debut on March 23 against Costa Rica, losing 1-0, and then took part in Scotland’s two-month mini-tour of Latin America.

Due to an injury in May 2021, he was not named to the Scotland squad for the postponed UEFA Euro 2020 tournament.

The fee set a new club record for Sheffield United as well as a new record for a Scottish player transfer, until it was surpassed a few days later by Kieran Tierney’s £25 million move from Celtic to Arsenal.

2018

He was born in England and makes his international debut for Scotland in March 2018.

On January 31, 2018, he was loaned to Barnsley, who was then managed by Paul Heckingbottom. On 10 February 2018, he scored his first goal for Barnsley in a 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday.

McBurnie was named the Championship Player of the Month for February after scoring six goals in his first eight games for Barnsley. He was also called up to the Scotland squad due to his form. McBurnie was named Barnsley’s Player of the Year on April 28, 2018.

2017

McBurnie came on as a substitute in Swansea’s first three Premier League games of the 2017-18 season. On the last day of the English summer transfer window, August 31, 2017, a loan to Championship club Barnsley for the remainder of the season was agreed. Despite training with Barnsley, the transfer was not completed due to a paperwork issue, and he returned to Swansea.

2016

McBurnie was named Premier League 2’s ‘Player of the Month’ in January 2017. McBurnie signed a one-year contract extension with Liberty Stadium until June 2019.

2015

McBurnie joined Chester on a month’s loan on January 22, 2015. Following the injuries to first-team players, he was recalled early and returned to Bradford on February 20. Manager Phil Parkinson thought McBurnie’s development had benefited from the loan spell. On March 6, he returned to Chester on loan.

McBurnie signed a three-year contract with Swansea City on July 13, 2015, for an undisclosed fee that was later revealed to be £250,000. Later that month, he made his Swansea debut in under-21 matches in Holland.

He joined League Two club Newport County on a one-month loan in November 2015. McBurnie made his Newport debut on November 28 against Luton Town, scoring a hat-trick after coming on as a 58th-minute substitute.
