Facebook Launched ‘SheLeadsTech’

  • Social networking site Facebook launched as new initiative, SheLeadsTech, to support women-founded or co-founded startups on March 5, 2017.

  • India will lead the world in smartphone adoption with a net addition of 350 million connections in 2016-20, says a GSM Association report on March 5, 2017.

Kanha Tiger Reserve became First in India get Official Mascot

  • Kanha has became the first tiger reserve in India to officially introduce a mascot (Bhoorsingh the Barasingha) to present the hard ground swamp deer as the spirit of the reserve and spread awareness to save it from possible extinction on April 1, 2017.
  • Barasingha, or swamp deer, is the state animal of Madhya Pradesh. The Kanha tiger reserve, spread over Mandla and Balaghat districts, is the only place in the world where the species exists.
  • The government finally chose the Barasingha, an endemic variety of deer, as the park’s mascot. ‘Bhoor’ means tawny/golden and ‘Singh’ means ‘antlers’.

Cyclone Debbie Hitted the Australian Coast

  • A powerful cyclone has pummelled the North-East Australian coast, causing major damage, torrential rain and power cuts to tens of thousands of homes on March 30,2017.
  • Cyclone Debbie made landfall between Bowen and Airlie Beach in Queensland as a category four storm, whipping gusts of up to 263km/h (163 m/h). It is moving inland as a category two storm but could cause damage for hours yet.

Germany Fired-up ‘World’s Largest Artificial Sun’ in push for Climate-friendly Energy

  • The scientists in Germany have flipped the switch on what is being described as ‘the world’s largest artificial Sun’, a device they hope will help shed light on new ways of making climate-friendly fuels on March 23, 2017.
  • The giant honeycomb-like set-up of 149 spotlights (officially known as ‘Synlight’) in Juelich, about 30 km West of Cologne, uses xenon short-arc lamps normally found in cinemas to simulate .natural sunlight that’s often in short supply in Germany at this time of year.
  • By focusing the entire array on a single 20-by-20 cm spot, scientists from the German Aerospace Centre, or DLR, will be able to produce the equivalent of 10000 times the amount of solar radiation that would normally shine on the same surface.
  • It created such fumace-Iike conditions (with temperatures of up to 3000° Celsius) is key to testing novel ways of making hydrogen.
