- He was a four-year letterman at Fort Osage High School, starting quarterback, punter, and kicker. As a senior, he passed for 2,129 yards on 142 passes with 26 touchdowns and only three interceptions.

When he was healthy, he performed well and has since been regarded as one of the best quarterbacks in Kansas State football history. Overall, he threw for 7,134 yards on 552 attempts (63% completion rate), 42 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions.
