Skylar Thompson: Who Are His Parents?

Skylar Thompson was raised by his parents, Brad and Teresa Thompson, until he was six years old.

Brad, his father, is a retired basketball coach and administrator. He wasn’t thrilled when Skylar decided to pursue his passion for football, but after seeing his son’s skills and prospective talents, he couldn’t stop him.

Skylar and his mother, Teresa, had a strong bond and were always together when he was little. His father was usually preoccupied due to his demanding job as a professor, coach, and principal.

When he was in first grade, his mother, Teresa, died of stage-four breast cancer. Skylar was in elementary school when his mother died, forcing him to rely on his father.

As a memorial to his mother, the 25-year-old quarterback for the Miami Dolphins and his family planned “A Night With Skylar Thompson,” their first annual charity event, with the support of Goolsby’s.

Skylar Thompson’s dad Brad Thompson was the former basketball coach at Palmyra.

Brad coached basketball until 2000 before moving into administration at Highland for three years. He grew up playing basketball with his father, John, who played and taught in various groups.

John Thompson had a successful coaching career in Missouri, first with the Macon boys’ program and subsequently with the Jefferson City girls’ team. Brad switched into coaching after playing for his father, taking Don Foster’s place at Palmyra after Foster retired in 1993.

He previously served as principal at Palmyra R-1 School for two years until stepping down in 2005. Thompson worked as a professor at Palmyra for seven years before being appointed principal. After 16 years at Fort Osage, he retired as a freshmen principle in 2020.

His passion was basketball, so he was taken aback when his first son expressed an interest in football. Despite his desire for his kid to pursue a basketball career, he was pleased to watch Skylar shine from an early age.

Brad, who still has many relatives and friends in Northeast Missouri, said he wasn’t surprised when his son, Skylar, was named to Miami’s 53-man roster. Brad felt confident in his son’s success after witnessing him play live in the Dolphins’ third preseason game.

Skylar and close friends were gathered in front of the TV as the selection was being made, and his name was not called; then the phone rang, and it was the Dolphins saying they were going to draft him. It was one of the former coach’s happiest moments as a father.

Miami Dolphins Career

  • The Miami Dolphins selected him with the 247th overall pick in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft. His play in the first two games of the 2022 preseason was noteworthy, and ProFootballTalk speculated that his success would push the Dolphins to keep Thompson on the active squad.
  • This was preferable to losing him to another squad. In addition, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel stated that leaving Thompson off the main roster would be difficult given his good preseason efforts.
  • He was ranked second among quarterbacks in passer rating at the end of the 2022 preseason (138.5). Only Sam Ehlinger of the Indianapolis Colts came close.
  • Furthermore, he was named to the 53-man roster following final cuts. After Teddy Bridgewater departed the game with a concussion in week 5, he made his NFL debut against the New York Jets.
  • In the 40-17 loss, he completed 19 of 33 passes for 166 yards and an interception. On October 15, 2022, he was named the Dolphins’ Week 6 starter against the Minnesota Vikings.
