Archery

 World Cup Final 2015

  • Deepika Kumari bagged her fourth silver medal in five years at the ‘Archery World Cup Final’ 2015 after going down to Korea’s Choi Misun in Mexico City on October 25, 2015 in Mexico City, Mexico.
  • She lost the gold medal in a score of 2-6 against the reigning world number one and top-seeded Misun. Dcepika’s only two international gold medals to date are the famous Commonwealth Games win in 2010 and, in 2012, the Antalya stage of the Archery World Cup.
  • Delhi lad Abhishek Verma has bagged India’s first ever Archery World Cup Final medal on October 24, 2015 in the compound section when he won a silver after being pipped by Turkey’s Demir Elmaagcli.

Athletics

 IPC World Championship

  • Indian para-athlete Amit Kumar bagged a silver in men’s club throw F51 event to give the country its second medal in the IPC Athletics World Championships at Doha on October 29, 2015. This victory gave Amit a berth for next year’s Rio Paralympic Games.
  • Amit clinched silver with an effort of 25.44 m, behind Serbia’s Zeljko Dimitrijcvic who won gold in a championship record of 26.29 m. Another Serbian, Milos Mitic bagged the bronze in 25.40 m.
  • With Amit’s medal, the 15-member Indian team ended the campaign with two silver. Devendra Jhajharia had won a silver in men’s javelin throw F46 event.

Sports Personalities

 Virender Sehwag

  • Virender Sehwag has announced his retirement from international cricket on October 19, 2015, more than two-and-a-half years on from his last appearance in March, 2013 against Australia in Hyderabad for India. With 8586 runs from 104 Test matches, Sehwag stands at fifth in India’s all-time list.
  • In ODIs, he scored 8273 runs, with 15 centuries including the second-highest individual score of 219. In 19 Twenty20 internationals, he made 394 runs. Aside from all those runs, Sehwag took 40 wickets in Tests and 96 in ODIs. He scored 17253 international runs across formats. Sehwag is the only Indian batsman to score a triple-century in Tests, and*he did it twice.

Zaheer Khan

  • One of India’s greatest fast bowlers, Zaheer Khan, announced his retirement from international cricket on October 15, 2015 with an immediate effect. He admitted that he could no longer handle the rigours of the game.
  • Khan, who plays for the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL, will end his domestic career in 2016 with the event’s ninth edition. He had played a major role in India’s 2011 World Cup triumph by taking 21 wickets.
  • The left-arm pacer has played 92 Test matches, 200 ODIs and 17 T20 Internationals has been in and out of the team in the last three to four years due to recurrent injuries which a took a toll on his body. He had taken 311 wickets. He is fourth highest wicket-taker for India.

First World Indigenous Games Started in Brazil

  • The inaugural World Indigenous Games kicked-off in the Northern Brazilian city of Palmas on October 23, 2015 after a festive opening ceremony in which indigenous athletes from all over the world mingled with each other.
  • Billed as the first ‘Indigenous Olympics’, the Games will see some 1800 indigenous athletes from 24 countries and regions take part in competitive and demonstration sports events in the next nine days.
  • Indigenous athletes will compete in a variety of sporting events, ranging from a few Western-style competitions (football, athletics and swimming) to many indigenous traditional games. A good example is xikunahity a football-style game in which the ball is controlled only with the head.

Paragliding World Cup Kicked-off in Himachal Pradesh

  • The Paragliding World Cup 2015 got underway with Union Minister of Civil Aviation P. Gajapati Raju flagging-off the pilots from the Billing launch site at Bir, Baijnath town in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh on October 24, 2015. Snow leopard is the official mascot of this World Cup.
  • A total of 130 pilots representing more than 35 countries are taking pan in the World Cup that will conclude on October 31, 2015. The local Billing Paragliding Association are the organisers of the event, while the Airports Authority of India (AAI) is the title sponsor.
  • For the first time GPS-Aided GEO Augmented Navigation (GAGAN ), an India Satellite Based Augmentation System (SBAS) programme jointly developed by the India Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the AAI will be used for live tracking of Ac pilots.
