Payten took over for his former teammate Andrew McFadden with the New Zealand Warriors on August 8, 2018, when he signed a deal to become an assistant coach for the 2019 season.

Payten was promoted to the position of interim head coach for the New Zealand Warriors after Stephen Kearney was fired as head coach on June 20, 2020. Later on, he was offered the post on a permanent basis, but he turned it down.
