Tommy Armstrong: Career Timeline

Tommy Armstrong Jr. finished one of the most productive Nebraska quarterback careers in 2016. Armstrong, a dual threat as a thrower and runner, started 44 games as a Husker, the most ever by a Nebraska quarterback.

He also achieved career highs in total offense, total touchdowns, throwing yards, and passing touchdowns at Nebraska.

Armstrong received his bachelor’s degree in communication studies in December 2016.

2016 (Senior)

Armstrong appeared in 11 games his senior year, missing games against Maryland and Tennessee due to hamstring injuries.

During his senior year, Armstrong established himself as Nebraska’s all-time leader in multiple career statistics, including quarterback starts, passing yards, and total offense. His senior year saw him awarded an honorable-mention All-Big Ten selection by the league’s coaches and media.

2015 (Junior) 

Armstrong appeared in 12 games, missing the Purdue game due to a foot issue. He completed 222 of 402 passes for 3,030 yards and 22 touchdowns, with eight throws of at least 250 yards.

Armstrong had 98 carries for 400 yards and seven touchdowns in the running game. His 3,430 yards of total offense were the third-most in school history.

2014 (Sophomore) 

Armstrong started all 13 games and totaled 3,400 yards of offense. He threw for 22 touchdowns, including seven in the final two games of the season. He rushed for more than 50 yards seven times, including a career-high 131 yards against McNeese State.

Armstrong began the season with three straight 300-yard total offense games. He threw for 271 yards and two touchdowns and carried for 62 yards and a touchdown against Florida Atlantic, assisting NU in setting a Big Ten modern-era total offense record with 784 yards.

Armstrong rushed for 131 yards on 11 carries against McNeese State, with runs of 42, 24 and 34 yards against the Cowboys. He also threw for 242 yards and two touchdowns, including a game-winning 58-yard touchdown throw to Ameer Abdullah in the final seconds.

Armstrong completed 12-of-21 throws for 260 yards and three touchdowns against Fresno State, including a 70-yard TD strike to Jordan Westerkamp. He also carried for 65 yards, making him the first Nebraska quarterback since 2008 to surpass 300 yards of total offense in three consecutive games.

Armstrong carried for 96 yards and passed for 113 yards in a 41-31 victory over Miami. In a win over Illinois, he threw for 166 yards and a 73-yard score while also rushing for 66 yards. Armstrong threw for a career-high 273 yards and nearly produced a fourth-quarter comeback in Michigan State’s 27-22 loss.

At Northwestern, Armstrong totaled 276 yards of offense, including 221 yards passing. On a reserve pass, he grabbed a 16-yard touchdown ball from De’Mornay Pierson-El, becoming the first NU quarterback to catch a touchdown pass since 2008.

Armstrong totaled 268 yards of offense versus Minnesota, including 223 yards passing. Armstrong’s leadership and calmness helped NU tie the biggest road comeback in school history in the regular-season finale against Iowa, as the Huskers overturned a 24-7 second-half deficit to win 37-34 in overtime.

Armstrong threw for a career-high four touchdowns against Iowa, including two in the second half to put NU in position for OT. In overtime, Armstrong connected with Kenny Bell for a game-winning nine-yard touchdown throw.

In the Holiday Bowl, Armstrong led Nebraska to 525 total yards against USC. He set Nebraska bowl records for passing yards (381), completions (32) and attempts (51). Armstrong also ran for 41 yards, contributing to a career-high and NU bowl-record 422 yards of total offense.

He tossed three touchdowns and ran for another in the fourth quarter before the Huskers’ comeback fell just short.

2013 (Redshirt Freshman) 

Armstrong took up the starting job midway through the season and went 7-1 as a starter. He was one of three quarterbacks who contributed significantly to NU’s success in 2013, entering the season as the co-No. 2 quarterback behind Taylor Martinez.

Armstrong finished with 966 yards passing and nine touchdowns, as well as 202 yards rushing and two scoring.

Armstrong earned his first career start against South Dakota State, going 12-of-15 for 169 yards and a touchdown. He led Nebraska to touchdowns on all three of his first three drives.

Armstrong was a top dual-threat quarterback in the country after guiding Cibolo Steele High School to the Class 5A state title game in each of his final two seasons.

In 2011, Armstrong lead Steele to 15 straight victories before losing in the state final game. He rushed for 1,281 yards and 16 touchdowns and passed for 1,945 yards and 29 touchdowns with only two interceptions. He finished roughly 59% of his passes.
