Jarrett Guarantano In Denver Roster

According to Brandon Krisztal of KOA 850 AM Denver, the Broncos will promote Guarantano from the practice squad to the 53-man roster on Tuesday.

Impact Guarantano is expected to remain on the Denver roster for the next three games of the season, but he’ll drop to third on the depth chart behind Russell Wilson and Brett Rypien once Wilson clears the NFL’s concussion protocol.

While Wilson was out for this past Sunday’s 24-15 win against the Cardinals, Guarantano filled in for Rypien before being demoted to the practice squad.

Wilson could be ready to play against the Rams on Sunday, but because the Cardinals were considering adding Guarantano to their roster as insurance at the position while their starting quarterback (Colt McCoy) is also in the concussion protocol, Denver swooped in to sign Guarantano before Arizona could.

Guarantano was demoted to the Broncos’ practice squad on Monday.

Impact Guarantano was promoted from the practice squad to replace Brett Rypien, who started in place of Russell Wilson (concussion) for the second game in a row Sunday.

However, Rypien went on to play every offensive action in this triumph over Arizona, completing 21 of his 26 throws for 197 yards and one touchdown to one interception. Guarantano is now eligible for one more promotion from the practice squad, though this is doubtful if Wilson plays against the Rams on Christmas Day.

Jarrett Guarantano: Career Details

  • Guarantano appeared in 41 games for the Volunteers over four seasons, starting 32 of them, although his final season in the SEC had more lows than highs.
  • Guarantano, a native of Lodi, New Jersey, was a redshirt senior in 2020, but the NCAA extended all athletes’ eligibility due to the COVID-19 epidemic, therefore he will be a sixth-year senior at WSU this year.
  • He’ll be one of five scholarship quarterbacks on WSU’s roster, along with freshman starter Jayden de Laura, redshirt freshman Gunner Cruz, redshirt sophomore Cammon Cooper, and incoming freshman Xavier Ward.
  • Both De Laura and the Cougars had mixed outcomes in their first season as starters, but the positives outweighed the negatives. Fans were pleased by de Laura’s ability as a passer and runner, as he threw for 886 yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions while also rushing for two scores.
  • However, in the remaining two games of the season, de Laura threw one touchdown, three interceptions, and was sacked six times in losses to USC and Utah.
  • While he showed a strong understanding of head coach Nick Rolovich’s run-and-shoot strategy, winning Pac-12 Freshman of the Week after a season-opening win against Oregon State, he wasn’t immune to rookie mistakes, committing five turnovers, including two fumbles, against the Trojans and Utes.
  • He appears to have a skill set that might make him an excellent match in Rolovich’s attack, similar to de Laura, yet his passing numbers have always been unimpressive.
  • Guarantano was named the nation’s top dual-threat quarterback in high school, throwing for 3,028 yards and 28 touchdowns while rushing for 523 yards and 12 scores at Bergen Catholic in New Jersey.
  • Guarantano received scholarship offers from Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and others, but picked Tennessee over Rutgers, where his father was a brilliant receiver.
  • Guarantano hopes to build on his accomplishments as a sophomore and junior when he enters the competition in Pullman.
  • As a junior at Tennessee, the 6-foot-4, 230-pounder wasn’t particularly productive, but he was more consistent, appearing in all 13 games for a team that went 8-5, including a win against Indiana in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl. Guarantano started seven games and finished with 16 touchdowns, eight interceptions, and 2,158 yards passing.
  • He broke the school record for consecutive passes thrown without an interception as a sophomore, completing 166 passes without throwing an interception. Guarantano was also the first Tennessee starter since 1972 to throw no interceptions in a season.
  • Guarantano accumulated 6,174 throwing yards, 38 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions in four seasons at Tennessee. He completed 61% of his passes and rushed for minus-62 yards. Guarantano did score five touchdowns on the ground, four of which came in the 2020 season.
  • Gardner Minshew had probably the best season of any grad transfer quarterback in college football history in 2018, ranking fifth in Heisman Trophy voting while leading WSU to a program-record 11 wins.
  • Former WSU coach Mike Leach recruited former Eastern Washington FCS star Gage Gubrud to Pullman the following year, but the former FCS star lost a position battle to Anthony Gordon, who went on to set school and Pac-12 single-season records for passing yards, passing touchdowns, completions, and total offense.
