Wayne put forth an outstanding showing in his debut junior season, playing with boys considerably older than him. He soon became hooked with the game and insisted on playing against older team members. Wayne scored 378 goals in his first junior season, an incredible performance for a youngster his age.

As he entered his adolescence, his popularity surpassed national boundaries, and the Wayne-wave began to sweep across Canada. His family relocated him to Toronto at the age of 14 to improve his skills and give him with better facilities.
