The Indian state of West Bengal has two police forces, one of which is West Bengal Police, the other one is the Kolkata Police, which has a separate jurisdiction.

During the British Raj, under the provisions of the Police Act of 1861, the West Bengal Police was reorganized. The head of this department is the officer designated as the Director-General of Police who reports to the State Government through the Home (Police) Department. The current post of Director General (DG) and Inspector General of Police (IGP) is held by Shri Virendra since June 1, 2018, who is an IPS officer of the 1985 batch.

The West Bengal Police has jurisdiction concurrent with the eighteen revenue districts of the State (Excluding the metropolitan city of Kolkata), which is comprised of one of the two general police districts of West Bengal under the Police Act 1861.

The other part of the general police district consists of the major portions of the metropolitan area of Kolkata and has a separate police force (Kolkata Police) that constitutes and is administered under the Calcutta Police Act 1866 & Calcutta (Suburban Police) Act 1866. This uniqueness in the arrangement was conceived during the colonial times when Calcutta was considered to be the capital of British India. The city police have been kept independent of the state police force.
