Mazzulla went to high school in Rhode Island, where he was on the first team of all-state players. At Bishop Hendricken, he won three state titles, the last one as a senior on a last-second shot.1
Mazzulla helped West Virginia win the National Invitation Tournament in 2007 when he was a freshman on the team. The team was coached by John Beilein. Mazzulla beat Duke in the second round of the 2008 NCAA Tournament.
He scored 13 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and gave out 8 assists. Due to a shoulder injury he got against Ole Miss, his growth plate never fused with his shoulder, so he had to sit out the 2008–2009 season.
