Jerry Jarrett: Professional wrestling career
In the 1960s, when Jarrett was a referee, he decided to become a pro wrestler.2
His friend Tojo Yamamoto and the experienced wrestler Sailor Moran taught him how to fight. In 1965, he had his first wrestling match in Hayti, Missouri. After his first match, Jarrett teamed up with Yamamoto to win. For the first few years, Jarrett mostly played for NWA Mid-America.
Between 1970 and 1976, he won the NWA Mid-America Tag Team Championship, the NWA World Tag Team Championship (Mid-America version), and the NWA Southern Tag Team Championship (Mid-America version) 10 times. Jarrett also worked for Gulas’ Southeastern Championship Wrestling and won the NWA Tennessee Tag Team Championship in 1975.
Jarrett started the Continental Wrestling Association in the year 1977. He not only booked the show, but he also wrestled on occasion. In July 1980, Jarrett and Yamamoto became the first CWA World Tag Team Champions. They lost the title to Austin Idol and Dutch Mantel in August 1980. In 1985, Jarrett wrestled for a short time as “The Hawaiian Flash” while wearing a mask.
Jarrett officially retired in 1988, but he started wrestling again for his United States Wrestling Association a few times in the mid-1990s.

At the beginning of the 1970s, Jarrett and his mother started putting on professional wrestling shows in the Memphis area for Gulas. After getting into a fight with Gulas in 1977, Jarrett decided to go his own way and start the Continental Wrestling Association (CWA).
With the help of Buddy Fuller, Jerry Lawler, and Jarrett’s mother, Jarrett turned the CWA into a successful promotion. Every Monday, he held events that sold out the Mid-South Coliseum, and every Saturday morning, he had shows on WMC-TV.
