Colt went to Jim Ned High School and played football, which his father coached. During his stay there, he won multiple awards and was the all-time highest passer in Texas Division 2A. During his junior and senior years, he also served as the team’s punter. He started as a free safety but was moved to defence after suffering a concussion.

After seeing limited action as a rookie, McCoy contended for the starting quarterback position in 2011 with Garrett Gilbert and David Ash. After Gilbert faltered against BYU, McCoy and Ash took his position, and McCoy guided the squad to a game-winning drive. McCoy split starting duties with Ash for the following three weeks, but after struggling against Oklahoma, he lost the starting role to Ash.
He was called in late in both the Missouri and Kansas State games when coach Mack Brown needed a spark, and he nearly led a comeback against Kansas State. As a result, he was designated the starting quarterback for the Texas A&M game. This would be the final scheduled meeting between the two in-state rivals before Texas A&M leaves the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference, as well as A&M’s final Big 12 game.
