Sardar Azmoun was born in Gonbad-e Kavus, Iran, on January 1, 1995. He is the son of Khalil Azmoun, a former member of Iran’s national volleyball team.

Khalil Azmoun began professionally playing volleyball in 1983. In 1985, he was accepted into the Iranian national youth squad. He was a member of the national team from 1986 until 1991.

Khalil Azmoun coached careers in the Iranian Club Super League in 2001. He also worked as a coach with the Javaheri Gonbad VC.

On June 16, 2015, Azmoun scored against Turkmenistan in a 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification. On September 3, 2015, he scored his first senior brace against Guam in a World Cup qualifier. He scored his first hat-trick for the Iranian national team in a 3-0 victory over Macedonia at Philip II Arena.

He scored the opening goal in Iran’s 2-0 win over Uzbekistan eight days later, sealing qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. In June 2018, the Iranian national team picked him to its final squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. He scored the game-winning goal against Morocco on June 15, his first World Cup appearance.
