Sunita Viswanath

  • Sunita Viswanath, the only Indian American woman is among 12 faith leaders to be honoured as Champions of Change by the White House for her work to encourage Hindus to take care of the environment.
  • Sunita is co-founder and active board member of the 14-year-old front-line women’s human rights organisation, Women for Afghan Women.
  • She is also co-founder and board member of Sadhana : Coalition of Progressive Hindus, living and building a Hinduism that prioritises social justice, and upholding the Hindu principles.

Gennady Padalka

  • Gennady Padalka, a Russian cosmonaut has broken the record for the longest time spent in space with a total of 804 days as on July, 2015.
  • He broke the old record of 803 days, nine hours and 41 minutes set by fellow cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev (qow retired) across six missions from 1998 to 2005.
  • He will return to the Earth in September, 2015. Till that time he will have spent a total of 877 days, or roughly 2.5 years, in space.
  • He is the current commander of the International Space Station which has been orbiting the Earth.

Kamal Bawa

  • India’s most prominent biologist and an evolutionary ecologist, Kamal Bawa, has been elected to the London based prestigious Royal Society in recognition of his pioneering contributions in the area of conservation science on July 4, 2015.
  • Bawa is a distinguished Biology professor at the University of Massachusetts in Boston. With this He joined former and current fellows such as Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking and about 80 Nobel laureates.

Lord Kamlesh Patel

  • Professor Lord Kamlesh Patel of Bradford, an Order of the British Empire (OBE) and a leading voice on health, social care and community cohesion in the UK, has become the first British Asian to join the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) on July 8, 2015.
  • He succeeded Lord Morris of Handsworth, who is stepping down after 11 years as an ECB Director. Currently, he sits in the House of Lords as a Labour Peer.

Fazle Hasan Abed

  • Fazle Hasan Abed, a man who created a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) based at Bangladesh, credited with helping more than 150 million people out of poverty was named the winner of the 2015 World Food Prize on July 1, 2015.
  • He created the NGO, Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC), as a temporary relief organisation to help with recovery from the 1970 typhoon that killed about 500000 people and the subsequent war fought in 1971 to win independence from Pakistan.
  • Now, BRAC has grown into one of the world’s largest nongovernmental organisations focused on alleviating poverty.
  • It is estimated to have helped more than 150 million people out of poverty in Africa and Asia and is expanding efforts to 10 additional countries.

Paul Singh

  • An Indian-American professor R. Paul Singh, has been named as the 2015 Global Confederation for Higher Education Associations for Agriculture and Life Sciences World Agriculture Prize laureate in the last week of June, 2015.
  • R. Paul Singh is known for a body of research in areas such as energy conservation, freezing preservation, post-harvest technology and mass transfer in food processing.

Darshan Jain

  • An Indian American teacher Darshan Jain is among the 108 teachers named by President Barack Obama as recipients of the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching as on July 2, 2015.
  • Jain, has already taught mathematics at Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois for eight years.
  • Now, there he serves as the Director of Mathematics. He alongwith the other winners will receive a $ 10000 award each from the National Science Foundation.
  • The Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching is awarded annually to outstanding K-12 (kindergarten through 12th grades) science and mathematics teachers from across the country America.
