Gabbidon joined his hometown club, Welsh Football League Division Three side Panteg, in August 2015, where his brother David also played. Gabbidon continued to serve as a player-coach at the club while also fulfilling his many media obligations.

2014

Gabbidon signed a one-year player/coach contract with Cardiff City on September 1, 2014. Following the resignation of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, he was named acting manager of the club in September 2014. Gabbidon was set to be released at the end of his contract on May 5, 2015.

2012

Gabbidon joined Crystal Palace on September 18, 2012. He did not make his debut until 15 December 2012, when he replaced André Moritz in the 77th minute of a 2-2 away tie with Birmingham City. Gabbidon scored his first goal for Palace and his first league goal in eight years against Leicester City on 20 April 2013 from a Stephen Dobbie free kick in a 2-2 draw.

He only scored once again for Palace, in a 3-1 home win over Sunderland on August 31, 2013. Crystal Palace released him in May 2014. He had played 38 games in all, scoring twice.

2011

Gabbidon signed a one-year contract with Queens Park Rangers (QPR) on July 24, 2011, after impressing on trial. On 13 August 2011, he made his debut, scoring an own goal in a 4-0 loss against Bolton Wanderers. Gabbidon scored his first first-team goal since March 2005, a header from a corner in QPR’s 1-0 FA Cup third round replay win over Milton Keynes Dons on January 17, 2012.

It was his only goal for QPR since manager Neil Warnock was fired. Gabbidon was released at the end of the 2011-12 season after playing little under new manager Mark Hughes.

Gabbidon confirmed his retirement from international football in October 2010. However, it was stated on January 6, 2011, that new Wales manager Gary Speed had requested Gabbidon to reconsider his decision to retire from international football. “He’s the type of player I’d like to see alter his mind,” Speed added. “I’ve left a number of messages for Danny and I’m sure he’ll come back to me in due course.”

Wales and Celtic player Joe Ledley, a personal friend of Gabbidon’s, has also asked for him to return to the international fold. Ledley stated on his Twitter account: “Danny Gabbidon, my best friend in football, should come out of retirement and play for Wales, in my opinion. We require him.” He was later picked to the team for the match against the Republic of Ireland in February 2011.

2009

Gabbidon was named to the First Division team of the year in April 2004. Despite concerns that Gabbidon would leave Cardiff City in 2004, Gabbidon signed a contract extension in September 2004, keeping him to the club until 2008. Cardiff were willing to pay him “…the most lucrative deal ever offered to a Cardiff player,” with club owner Sam Hammam declaring, “I want to make Danny Gabbidon a cornerstone of Cardiff City FC, I view him as the ultimate future of this football club embodied.” Gabbidon was unaccustomed to Cardiff being involved in a relegation battle in the early half of the 2004-05 season.

However, an unbeaten run in January 2005 lifted Cardiff five points clear of the Championship relegation zone, and Gabbidon was voted Championship player of the month. Gabbidon’s future at Cardiff was uncertain due to a financial problem at the end of the season, and he was sold to West Ham United in July 2005 to help lower the pay cost. On July 4, 2009, he took part in the Cardiff City Stadium’s first ever game, an all-stars contest.

2007

In August 2007, he signed a two-year contract extension, stating, “I’m disappointed not to be playing, but the new contracts demonstrate that the club wants both me and James [Collins] to stay. We will now work hard and battle to prove that we are deserving of a spot on the team.” Gabbidon was sidelined by injuries for West Ham from December 2007 until August 2009, when he returned in the League Cup against Millwall.

Gabbidon is one of several Premier League players who engage with fans via Twitter. The Football Association fined him £6,000 in May 2011 for comments he made on Twitter after West Ham’s 2-1 home defeat by Aston Villa in April 2011. He agreed to a charge of inappropriate conduct in connection with the tweet;- “You don’t get it, do you? F*** the rest of you, you’ll never get another tweet from me again. Good bye “. West Ham released Gabbidon in June 2011.

2005

Gabbidon joined West Ham in July 2005 as part of a transaction that also included fellow defender James Collins. In October 2005, his exploits for his country earned him the Welsh Footballer of the Year title. He established himself in centre defence alongside Anton Ferdinand, guiding West Ham to a mid-table position in the Premier League in 2005-06 and a runner-up finish in the FA Cup final in May 2006.

He was crowned ‘Hammer of the Year’ for his performances in the 2005-06 season, with Marlon Harewood coming in second. Gabbidon had been a constant as West Ham battled relegation in the 2006-07 season until he sustained a torn hamstring in November 2006, which kept him out for a month. Groin issues necessitated surgery in January 2007 and again in April, preventing him from playing the balance of the season. West Ham began the 2007-08 season with Anton Ferdinand and Matthew Upson in the centre of defence, with Gabbidon filling in as a sub.

2002

Gabbidon grew up in Wales, the son of a Jamaican father and a Barbadian mother. Gabbidon had made 17 appearances for the Welsh Under-21 team when he was unexpectedly called up for the Welsh senior squad in a World Cup qualifier against Belarus in October 2001. He was an unused replacement in that match and was summoned back into the senior team for a friendly against Argentina in February 2002, but he did not make his debut until the following month, in a 0-0 home draw against the Czech Republic on March 27, 2002.

Despite missing a considerable portion of the 2002-03 season due to a back injury, he became a fixture in the team and was part of the squad that nearly missed out on a berth at Euro 2004, losing to Russia in the play-offs, and the squad that did not qualify for the 2006 World Cup. Wales assistant coach Roy Evans predicted Gabbidon would be a future captain of the national team, saying, “Even if it is not my decision, I view him as potential captain material. But he possesses all of the necessary characteristics. You do not always have to be outspoken; instead, set a good example.” Gabbidon captained the side in place of the injured Ryan Giggs in a 1-0 away defeat to Cyprus in November 2005, and again in a 1-0 triumph over Bulgaria in August 2007.

 2000

Gabbidon agreed to a four-year contract with Cardiff City in September 2000, with a cost of up to £500,000 contingent on appearances and future honours. In the 2001-02 season, his performances helped Cardiff to the Division 2 play-offs, he made his senior international debut for Wales in March 2002, and he won the Welsh clubman of the year award in October 2002. He signed a contract extension in April 2002, citing the potential of exciting days ahead as the reason for doing so. A back injury that had been bothering him for some time forced him off the pitch during a match against Barnsley in November 2002, and he did not return to competitive action until April 2003, in a reserve game.

In May 2003, he returned to the first-team in time to help Cardiff gain promotion to Division 1 via the play-offs. He missed several games at the start of the 2003-04 season due to a heel injury, but his assured performances at center-back, along with those of striker Robert Earnshaw, prompted club chairman Sam Hammam to declare in December 2003 that “our top young players are going nowhere” in the January 2004 transfer window.

1999

Gabbidon, who was born in Cwmbran, Wales, began his career at West Bromwich Albion as an apprentice in November 1996 before becoming a professional in July 1998. On 20 March 1999, he made his Albion debut in a 1-0 home defeat against Ipswich Town, and he went on to make 27 appearances for West Brom in all competitions.

Gabbidon was dropped from the team after Gary Megson was appointed manager near the end of the 1999-2000 season. Des Lyttle was signed to fill the right wingback position as Megson switched to a 5-3-2 formation. Gabbidon began the 2000-01 season on a one-month loan with Cardiff City.

1979

Daniel Leon Gabbidon (born 8 August 1979) is a retired Welsh professional footballer who last played as a defender for Welsh club Panteg. He has previously played for West Bromwich Albion, Cardiff City (twice), West Ham United, QPR, and Crystal Palace.
