Duff Goldman: Childhood And Family

Goldman was born into a Jewish family in the city of Detroit, which is located in the state of Michigan. Soon after that, he uprooted his life and relocated to Missouri. Goldman was given the moniker “Duff” when he was just a young child.

Willie Goldman, who was only a toddler at the time, had trouble pronouncing the name Jeffrey and instead kept repeating “Duffy.”

His mother discovered him in the kitchen of the family home when he was just four years old, clutching a butcher cleaver and watching the television show Chef Tell.

When Goldman was ten years old, his parents separated, and he split his time between living in Northern Virginia and in the town of Sandwich, which is located on Cape Cod in the state of Massachusetts.

Goldman went to McLean High School, which was located in McLean, Virginia, in 1992.

There, he was a member of the McLean Highlanders ice hockey team. He received his diploma from Sandwich High School in Sandwich in the year 1993.

He started working in kitchens when he was only fourteen years old; his first job was at a bagel store located in a shopping center. Goldman also had a job at McDonald’s working in the fry kitchen.

Goldman has stated that he was motivated to apply for a position as a cook at Charleston when he was a sophomore in college. He got the idea from going to what he believed to be the best restaurant in Baltimore at the time, Charleston.

Cindy Wolf, the head chef, had a look at his resume and noticed that it included experience that was not relevant to the position. However, Cindy did offer him a job making cornbread and biscuits exclusively, and Goldman points to this as the moment in his career when things began to turn around for him.

After completing his undergraduate degree at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, he went on to pursue further education at institutions such as the Corcoran College of Art and the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone in Napa Valley, California.

After gaining experience as an apprentice in prestigious restaurants in California, such as the French Laundry, and as the executive pastry chef of the Vail Cascade Hotel in Colorado, he moved back to Washington, D.C. to work as a baker at Todd English’s Olives restaurant.

Goldman launched his own company, which he named Charm City Cakes, in the year 2000. In the beginning, he ran his cake business out of his home in Charles Village with the assistance of two assistants that he had hired.

As the demand for his unique cakes expanded, he hired additional people to work for him. Many of the people he hired did not have any prior experience working in the food industry as pastry chefs; rather, they were skilled artists, architects, or sculptors.

Blow torches, along with other power equipment like grinders and drills, are employed today in the bakery shop owned by Goldman to assist in the formation of the foundational supports of the one-of-a-kind gastronomic masterpieces.

Goldman and his team have designed some extraordinary cakes, such as a sculpture of buttercream in the shape of Elvis’s head that is three feet tall, an ear that is anatomically accurate, a smoking volcano, a three-dimensional German Shepherd, as well as a replica of a CAT scan machine, a Jeep, and an edible Wrigley Field. Goldman’s cakes have won several awards for their creativity.

Tom Clancy, the cast of “Lost,” the cast of “30 Rock” (together with a cake prop), and Sir Roger Moore are among the celebrities whose birthday cakes Goldman has created.
