Hogan began his professional wrestling career in 1977, but he rose to international prominence after joining with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) in 1983.

Hulk Hogan: Childhood And Family

Terry Bollea was born on August 11, 1953, in Augusta, Georgia, USA, to construction worker Pietro ‘Peter’ Bollea and homemaker and dance teacher Ruth V. Bollea.2

When he was one and a half years old, his family relocated to Tampa, Florida. He was interested in sports as a child and even participated in Little League Baseball as a pitcher.

Despite being courted by organizations such as the New York Yankees and the Cincinnati Reds, an injury cut short his baseball career.

When he was 16, he began simply watching professional wrestling. “Superstar” Billy Graham sparked his interest in wrestling and served as an inspiration to him.

Hogan was awestruck by his appearance and aspired to be as violent and “inhuman” as him.

Hogan went to Hillsborough Community College and the University of South Florida for his education. He dropped out of university to focus on his music career because he didn’t have time to attend studies with so many gigs on his plate.

In 1976, Hogan created a musical band called ‘Ruckus’ with two local musicians, playing fretless bass guitar. Their band quickly became well-known in the Tampa area.

Hulk was seen by wrestling brothers Jack and Gerald Brisco during one of their performances.

They were delighted with his physique and hired wrestler trainer Hiro Matsuda to coach him. Hogan eventually agreed to enter wrestling when the two brothers approached him in 1976.

Hulk Hogan: TV Show Comeback And Books

In 1996, Hogan stunned everyone by making a spectacular comeback to the wrestling ring.3

Re-inventing himself as “Hollywood Hogan,” the wrestler positioned himself as a villain and guaranteed his appeal among wrestling fans once more.

Hogan joined Ted Turner’s WCW (World Championship Wrestling) as part of the New World Order, a wrestling team that included Hogan, Kevin Nash, and Scott Hall.

This controversial triumvirate garnered massive support from wrestling fans and, in the end, restored Hogan to his former glory.

In his autobiography, Hollywood Hulk Hogan, published in 2002, he detailed his experiences as a professional wrestler. In the reality series Hogan Knows Best, which premiered in the summer of 2005, he also provided viewers an intimate peek at his family life.

The show followed Hogan and his wife Linda as they raised their adolescent children, daughter Brooke and son Nick.

The show was first compared to veteran musician Ozzy Osbourne’s popular reality show, The Osbournes.

Hogan responded by dubbing his family “the anti-Osbournes.” Hogan was inducted into the World Wrestling Entertainment Hall of Fame the following year. His pal Stallone bestowed the accolade upon him.

Hogan had a popular television show for four seasons. Viewers came in to observe the famed wrestler deal with a variety of personal and family issues, such as attending marriage counseling with his wife and reacting to his daughter’s dates. The most difficult situation, though, occurred off-screen.

Hogan’s son, Nick, was involved in an automobile accident in August 2007 that left his friend John Graziano badly injured.

Three months later, law authorities arrested Nick for his role in the catastrophe. Nick pled no contest to a felony offense of reckless driving in May 2008 and received an eight-month prison sentence.

Linda Hogan, Hogan’s wife, filed for divorce around this time, trying to end their 24-year marriage. Hogan told the press that he hoped to reconcile, but his wife later denied the idea.
