Complete Ban of Indian TV, Radio Contents in Pakistan
- Pakistan’s media regulatory authority has decided to enforce a complete ban on Indian TV and radio contents from October 21, 2016. It has warned that the licences of those found guilty of violating the ban will be suspended. In a statement of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), it has decided to ban airing of Indian content at the request of the federal government.
- The ban extends to all Indian content on cable . and radio being aired in Pakistan. Besides, it also decided to cancel the one-sided rights that were given to Indian media in 2006 by government of former military dictator Pervez Musharraf.
World Bank Pledged $ 2 Billion to Bangladesh for Climate Change
- World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim, concluding a two-day trip to Bangladesh focused on the country’s successes in reducing extreme poverty, pledged $ 2 billion over the next three years in new funding to help the country become less vulnerable to climate change on October 19, 2016.
- He made the pledge after touring schools that double as cyclone shelters during major storms.
- He also visited rural communities in more remote locations that are enjoying the benefits of electricity in their homes and shops through solar systems as part of the country’s green-growth agenda.
- Bangladesh, with active community participation, has improved defensive measures, including early warning systems, cyclone shelters, evacuation plans, coastal embankments, reforestation schemes and increased awareness and communication. These measures have reduced deaths in major storms.

Maldives left Commonwealth,Weeks after Democracy Warning
- The Maldives left the Commonwealth, weeks after the organisation warned it could be suspended because of its lack of progress in promoting the rule of law and democracy on October 15, 2016.
- The Indian Ocean archipelago has been mired in political unrest since Mohamed Nasheed, its first democratically elected leader, was ousted in disputed circumstances in 2012.
- The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group last month warned the Maldives that in the absence of substantive progress in rule of law and democracy, it would consider its options, including suspension.
USA Lifted Economic Sanctions on Myanmar
- President Barack Obama lifted US economic sanctions on Myanmar, the culmination of years of rapprochement that he has worked to facilitate on October 7, 2016.
- The USA has already eased broad prohibitions on investmerH and trade but had retained more targeted restrictions on military-owned companies and officials and associates of the former ruling junta.
- It removes the national emergency with respect to xVlyanmar — the executive order authorising sanctions that has been renewed annually by different US Presidents for about two decades till now.
