Holder was purchased by the Chennai Super Kings from the Indian Premier League auction at his basic price of $20,000 just a few short days after making his debut for his country in an international competition in 2013. In 2014, Sunrisers made the acquisition. He was also handed a batting promotion by the Sunrisers Hyderabad, who sent him to bat ahead of all-rounders Karn Sharma and Parvez Rasool.
