Madison Kocian is an American artistic gymnast who won the ‘World Championship’ in 2015 and the ‘Olympic’ silver medal in the uneven bars event in 2016. She was born and raised in Madison and began training as a gymnast at a young age.

Her parents enrolled her at the ‘World Olympic Gymnastics Academy’ (WOGA), a well-known training facility that has produced several famous “Olympians,” including Nastia Liukin and Carly Patterson.

She shot to national prominence after being named to the US junior national team in 2009. She was 12 at the time and competed in the ‘National Championships,’ where she finished sixth in the all-around competition.

In 2013, she began her senior career by competing in the ‘Secret US Classic’ in Illinois. By the completion of the competition, she was ranked sixth. She was one of four gymnasts who tied for first place on the uneven bars at the 2015 ‘World Championship.’

Madison Kocian’s boyfriend, Jack Hughes, works as an investment banking analyst in Houston, Texas.

Jack Hughes is currently employed for Performance Trust Capital Partners. He works as an Investment Banking Analyst there. Hughes has been a consultant for eleven months. Prior to that, he worked as an investment banking support analyst, which is a low-level, extremely competitive profession.

Madison Kocian: Career Timeline

Junior Profession

In 2009, Kocian made her elite debut. She finished sixth in the all-around and ninth on uneven bars at her inaugural Junior Nationals. She made her international debut in the TOP Gym competition, finishing third in the all-around, first on vault, and second on balance beam.

At the CoverGirl Classic the following year, she finished third on uneven bars, fifth on vault, and sixth overall. She finished fifth in the all-around at Nationals that year, as well as third on uneven bars and sixth on vault and floor exercise.

The next spring, Kocian competed in the City of Jesolo Trophy, winning team gold and finishing second overall. Injuries kept her out of competition until 2013, when she was promoted to senior elite gymnast.

2013

At the American Classic, Kocian made her senior debut, winning the all-around, vault, and uneven bars and placing second on beam and floor.

She went on to compete in the United States Classic, where she finished eighth in the all-around and second on uneven bars. Her results were sufficient to qualify her for her first senior Nationals.

Kocian was leading the all-around after two revolutions at Nationals when she rolled her ankle on floor exercise and had to withdraw. Despite this, she was named to the National team.

Her first competition since returning was the 2014 WOGA Classic in February, where she won gold on the uneven bars and silver on the balancing beam. Because she did not participate on vault or floor, she did not place in the all-around.

2014

She was nominated to the senior American team for the City of Jesolo Trophy in March. She competed in a mixed team with Italy’s Alessia Leolini and Romania’s Stefania Stanila, Andreea Munteanu, and Silvia Zarzu, alongside compatriot Rachel Gowey.

The mixed team did not advance to the team final, and Kocian and Gowey stood on the podium with the rest of the Americans during the medal ceremony. Kocian also won gold on uneven bars, defeating fellow countrywoman Kyla Ross.

In early August, she competed in the US Classic. She had planned to do the all-around but had to withdraw after two revolutions due to an ankle injury on balance beam. Despite this, she managed to finish second on uneven bars. She elected to compete just in bars, earning silver, and beam, ranking fifth, at Nationals.

She was nominated to the American team for the Pan American Senior Championships immediately following Nationals. She won team gold, silver on uneven bars (behind compatriot Ashton Locklear), and fourth on beam.

She competed in the World Championships in Nanning, China, in October. She made an error on uneven bars in qualifying, which knocked her out of the event finals, but she nailed the routine in the team final and won gold with the USA.

2015

In July, Kocian raced in two events at the US Classic. While she finished tenth on the balance beam, she won the title on the uneven bars. She competed in the all-around at the National Championships, winning the uneven bars title and finishing sixth overall.

In October, Kocian was named to the American team for the World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland. She qualified for the uneven bars final and helped the United States defend their team gold medal.

In the uneven bars final, Kocian found herself in a first-ever four-way tie for gold, matching China’s Fan Yilin and Russia’s Viktoria Komova and Daria Spiridonova’s 15.366.

2016

Kocian began the season with victories on the uneven bars and balancing beam at the WOGA Classic in February. She competed at the U.S. Classic in June, winning silver on bars and finishing fifteenth on beam following a fall.

She earned silver on uneven bars, fifth in the all-around, sixth on floor exercise, and seventh on balancing beam at the National Championships. She qualified for the Olympics by finishing first on uneven bars, eighth in the all-around, ninth on beam and floor, and twelfth on vault. She was named to the United States Olympic team.

Olympics in Rio

The Americans competed in the fourth qualification subdivision, beginning with floor exercise. Kocian won both of her events, helping the Americans qualify first for the team final.

She was the first to qualify for the uneven bars final. She only competed on uneven bars in the team final, which helped the Americans win gold. She finished second to Russia’s Aliya Mustafina in the uneven bars final.

Kocian retired from elite gymnastics that fall and began her freshman year at UCLA.

Madison described her relationship with a past doctor as “like family,” with proper care and understanding. However, it enabled Larry to abuse her. Madison also stated that she first kept her mouth shut at the Karolyi Ranch in Texas owing to the terror and quiet culture.

Furthermore, Madison’s parents eventually approached the media and said that their daughter was not worth her professional achievement since Kocian was sexually molested by her doctor.

Larry was sentenced to more than 175 years in jail in early 2018 for sexually abusing women and girls for decades while at Michigan State University and as a USA Gymnastics doctor. He was sentenced to 235 years in jail after being found guilty.
