The next week, Kelley started for the first time in his career in a 24–21 win over TCU. However, Stafford came back and Kelley didn’t play much in the next two games. The Longhorns went 6-5 that year and did not play in a bowl game.
Kelley was the clear-cut starter at quarterback going into the 1988 season. But Mark Murdock took his place in games against the University of North Texas and the University of Oklahoma. Murdock played well in those games and in a win over New Mexico that was a blowout.
In the game against Arkansas, Kelley was taken out of the game and replaced with Murdock, who almost brought the team back from a 24–3 deficit.
His last start was against Arkansas, because Murdock took over as the starter after that game.
