He won his second cap for the United States a month later against South Africa, where he assisted Steve Cherundolo on the game-winning goal. In the final game of the group stage, which was played against Nigeria, Edu was the one who drew a penalty, which Sacha Kljestan then took and finished. After suffering that defeat, the United States was eliminated from contention in the group stage. On May 25, 2010, while playing for the United States in a friendly match against Czech Republic, Edu scored his first goal for his country’s national team.

In 2009, Edu played for the national team only once, coming on as a stoppage-time replacement in a World Cup qualifying match against El Salvador. This was his sole appearance for the national team. That would be the only game he would play in the final level of qualification for South Africa. Despite this, he was chosen to be one of the 23 players that would represent their country at the FIFA World Cup in South Africa in 2010. On June 18, he was playing against Slovenia, and in the 85th minute, with the game tied at 2–2, he volleyed in a free kick that was taken by Landon Donovan. However, the referee, Koman Coulibaly, disallowed the goal. Commentators and columnists who believed that the United States did not commit any fouls on the play and were the ones who were being fouled for the most part were among those who harshly criticised Coulibaly’s decision.

Throughout the years 2011 and 2012, Edu continued to make appearances for Jürgen Klinsmann’s team. After that, he started making less appearances with the national team.
